As a platinum-selling country music artist and, more importantly, a lifelong fan of the genre, Id like to send out this heartfelt plea to the gatekeepers of the industry:
Enough already.
Id like to think that I am expressing what nearly every artist, musician and songwriter (with perhaps a few exceptions) is thinking when I contend that the Bro Country phenomenon must cease.
It has had its run for better or worse and its time for Nashville to get back to producing, and more importantly promoting, good singers singing real songs. Its time for country music to find its identity again before it is lost forever.

But as someone who grew up loving and being forever affected by the true greats of country music, I simply have to offer up this plea to the Nashville country music industry to reclaim the identity and poetic greatness that once was our format. The well-written poetic word of the country song has disappeared.

Willie Nelson once wrote in his early song, "Shotgun Willie," that you cant make a record if you aint got nothing to say. Apparently, thats not the case anymore.
Disposable, forgettable music has been the order of the day for quite a while now and its time for that to stop.

These days, it seems the record labels are little more than distribution. Even distribution has been replaced by I-tunes. Steve Jobs set his sights for all of it and it has been next to impossible for labels to adapt. Most acts now produce their own record, turn it in to the label and they distribute. The pie is sliced differently now. Some say DVDs will no longer be produced in a few years from now.
Even Alan, I think , got dropped from his label.
Have you heard Jones do “Yaba-daba do the king is gone, and so are You”?
“Nickelcreek... They have a monthly 3 hour show at the Largo, here in Los Angeles. And while what they are doing is not country, its a heck of a lot more honest and heartfelt, with country and folk like melodies, than all that slick stuff coming out of Nashville.”
There are some pretty good country and honky tonk bands in LA.
I’ve seen some great stuff at The Grand Ole Echo and the Honky Tonk Hacienda.
You probably won’t ever hear it if somebody you know doesn’t tell you about it though.
We holla “yee haw”
and then we saddle up!
I Got Humped by a Pit Bull, But That’s Life
I don’t disagree with that prediction. Haven’t bought a DVD in about 2 years. I’ve bought several movies all on itunes.
Agree on labels as well.
I’ve heard quite a bit of the Possum, but I confess that as to that one, I haven’t yet had the pleasure....
"We got both kinds- Country AND Western!"
There is so much variety in Country music today that anyone can find artists that fit each person’s taste.
Yep, anything that isn’t “Urban” sounds like country by comparison.
It’s hard to imagine 40 years from now there being any nostalgia for what’s being put out today.
But the Beatles will still keep right on selling.
Oh, THOSE Highwaymen. There was a folk/pop group by that name in the 50s or 60s.
That is a great lineup. I’m seeing REK tonight, can hardly wait. Tomorrow night I’m seeing Cody Canada (acoustic, not with The Departed).
exactly.
In 40 years no one is going to give a crap about Smiley Virus or Lady Gag-me
Gaga is pretty much done as it is. Here latest album flopped, big time. All that’s left to her fan base are the gay men, just as with Madonna, Cher and Cindi Lauper.
I am sorry. I said DVD and meant CD.
I just don’t understand how Smiley Virus has any fans left.
I don’t know if it’s so much fans, as people who just want to see what the freak does next. It will grow tiresome in due course, as well.
