West Antarctic Ice Sheet's Collapse Triggers Sea Level Warning (15 foot rise)
NBC News ^ | 5/12/14 | Alan Boyle

Two teams of scientists say the long-feared collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet has begun, kicking off what they say will be a centuries-long, "unstoppable" process that could raise sea levels by as much as 15 feet.

"There's been a lot of speculation about the stability of marine ice sheets, and many scientists suspected that this kind of behavior is under way," Ian Joughin, a glaciologist at the University of Washington in Seattle, said in a news release about one of the studies published Monday. "This study provides a more qualitative idea of the rates at which the collapse could take place."

The findings from Joughin and his colleagues, appearing in the journal Science, indicate that in some places, Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier is losing tens of feet, or several meters, of ice elevation every year.

The real tragedy here is that Al Gore may lose his new 9 million dollar beach house.

Two things.
First Point: IMO none of this is man caused. Just a natural pattern the world has.
Second Point: The planet will be here long after mankind has gone away.

I read the story over the weekend. The one fact NBC left out was the estimated time for the melting and rise of the sea:

25,000 years!

25,000 years!

That would be much worse than watching paint dry.

Yes it has leveled out... and if temps plunge again this will somehow also be evidence of global warming. Oh wait, it’s now anthropogenic climate destruction.

South Pole: Green is ice present in 2013, which was not present in 1992. Red shows the opposite.

Red Chinese smokestacks.

In 2007, China 'Forced World Bank' to Doctor Pollution Report.

Red China's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), a cabinet ministry of the State Council, make noise but not much yet accomplished --- even after the mess of the Olympics --- regarding particulate emissions that travel up to the Arctic.

More area seems to be gaining ice than losing it.

Ah, but Chinese smog does not feed AGW just like chinese dinners leave you hungry soon.

If it's "unstoppable", why worry about it?

Good question. Worry is nothing more than interest paid in advance on a debt that never becomes due.

I think they are talking about land borne ice sheets shelving off.

A brilliant solution!!

“Save the ice!” Pass a law banning the serving whiskey etc. with ice, that would raise the sea levels even more. Perhaps as much as .001 foot per millenium. But we all must participate in at least one program that is counterproductive with negligible results like the rest of the eco nuts.

If the glacier ice breaks off the sheet and floats in to the ocean, it automatically raises the sea level at that moment...When it melts, it only the volume it has already maintained...Sea rise would = ZERO....

On the diagram, most ice loss is happening where it isn’t bordering the water.

I believe the concern is for ice that is sitting on land, not ice that is floating on water. If this ice melts and its water travels to sea, it could increase the ocean volume. Big if. If it just freezes somewhere else, we do not have a net change.
