Talking to NBC sportscaster Bob Costas on Monday's NBC Today, co-host Matt Lauer reacted to openly gay football player Michael Sam being drafted by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday: "The big picture here in terms of the NFL, is this a sea change or is this a one-off? Is this the league moving to the right side of history? Which by the way, they really can't do unless more players come forward."
“Dolphins player fined, sent for educational training after tweet about Michael Sam”
“I wonder if any other front office in the league would have cracked down this swiftly. Miami sweated through an endless PR forest fire last year over bullying and locker-room culture with the Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin mess. They probably decided early vis-a-vis Sam that they werent going to tolerate the smallest spark.”
“And this spark was small. Don Joness crime was two tweets, each exactly one word long, after Sam was chosen by St. Louis in the seventh round: OMG and Horrible. Maybe that was about the pick itself, maybe it was about Sam kissing his boyfriend on TV after he got the call. Either way, after rapidly being fined, barred from team activities until he attends educational training, and publicly scolded in separate statements by his coach and GM, Jones issued a formal apology crafted in fluent publicist-ese:”
I don't get it, Lauer .... it sounds more like a platitude than an insightful "big picture" observation. Maybe you should stick to reading things others have written for you.
Just like with the Boy Scouts, let gay Scouts in, then they demand to allow gay Scoutmasters.
Agreed. This ranks us there with the commercials being run targeting young people about so-called unknown racism where people supposedly say things like "Where are you really from?" and "Can I touch your hair?". I've NEVER even thought those things, let alone said them to anybody.
If someone says they come from Phoenix, and they have a Boston accent, I can see someone asking the question, “Where are you really from?” It would be an imprecise way of asking why the accent? Whether advisable or not, racism?
Why is everything racism? It’s just plain crazy talk.
What is right is now wrong and what is wrong is now being called right.
G_d won't be mocked. Just a matter of time.
Bingo! That is the issue. When someone asks me about myself, depending on the audience, I’m an executive, a Christian, a father, a husband, a musician, etc. Never does it cross my mind to lead with I’m a heterosexual. My identity is not my sexuality. Yes, I enjoy a healthy sex life with my wife and it is important to me personally but it is not for public consumption.
The issue is not if someone is gay - I truly and honestly don’t care (just like I don’t care about my straight friends’ sex lives either) - it is why is there the constant need to shove it in others’ faces (sorry for the pun)? If he is a good player I wish him all success but his sexuality should not even be up for discussion.
There is something sad about someone whose number one self-definition is based on what sex parts he or she prefers. Why do I care if this particular football player is gay? Do we really think, among the thousands of men who’ve played pro football, that he’s the first to swap fluids with another man? Certainly not!
One last thought... Gay may not be a choice but flaming gay is. Stop it!
“There is something sad about someone whose number one self-definition is based on what sex parts he or she prefers.”
Excellent!
Just as pathetic are those who demand that we promote these sad sacks, namely the pro-homo heterosexuals.
why is there the constant need to shove it in others faces
And at the same time they and the media are constantly shoving it in other peoples faces, they demand that everyone leave them alone,,,that their sexual preferences is private and is no one elses business. I don’t understand that.
A problem I’ve noted in all this are these mainstream media buffoons, liberals at that, discussing the NFL when otherwise, they probably don’t even care to watch football.
Idiocy and I think a few sportswriters are already distancing themselves.
98% of real sports fans do not care one whit who a player sleeps with, who an owner’s whore shows up in public with, or what ethnicity a player is. All of these are merely distractions from the business of winning, and are only important to liberal activist groups and ratings-seeking media folk.
Good point.
After a while, Sam will be out of football and guess where he will go? Coaching? High school? Middle School?
Some writer said because the NFL is the most masculine, macho type of sport. I don’t know myself if that reasoning actually holds up but I can see the point of view.
Better to be on the right side of the anus.
After a while, Sam will be out of football and guess where he will go?
...he could join the Navy and work his butt off to become a Rear Admiral...
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy.
I would guess that 99% of NFL fans barfed when they saw the picture of two dudes kissing. NFL stepped in it and is gonna take a while to get rid of the smell. NFL really lost big time.
Sick.
Is anybody out there still watching Matt Lauer?
