Northwestern University continued to stumble over diversity issues this week as Mexican students voiced disagreement with a campuswide letter that advised students not to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by engaging in racially-offensive activities, such as eating tacos and drinking tequila.
The letter was sent to students via e-mail, and published in The Daily Northwestern last week. Leaders of Alianza, a Latino student group, and the Associated Student Government called on students to remember that Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexicos victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. It is not a day to throw a sombrero-themed party, they said.
Some of our peers choose to throw Mexican-themed parties that are culturally insensitive, offensive, and detrimental to the Northwestern community, said the letter, which noted that this was a problem year after year. Drinking tequila shots, eating tacos, and wearing sombreros do not commemorate Mexican culture; on the contrary, that offends, marginalizes, and isolates many of our friends, classmates, and community members, and casts our entire community in poor light.
The two Alianza presidents who signed the letter are not Mexican, according to The Daily Northwestern.
Their recommendations were quite a shock to Northwestern students who actually came from Mexico. Several of them fired back recently.
Id like to say that I proudly embrace my tacos, tequila and sombreros, wrote Ruben Antonio Marcos Bours, a Northwestern student, in a statement. To me, they are a key part of my childhood, growing up in Monterrey, Mexico.
Another student who grew up in Mexico called the letter over the top.
The people who wrote it had a good intention, but their perspective is different, said Pablo Garcia Romero, a Northwestern student, in a statement.
Alianzas letter was no more popular among non-Latino students.
Ill probably still go to Chipotle and drink Corona tomorrow, but I do that like everyday is it still offensive? asked one online commenter.
Realizing that the letter was poorly received, representatives for Alianza and ASG confirmed that they are drafting a new letter that will better explain their position on Cinco de Mayo sensitivity.
Were not trying to pass judgement on the role tequila or tacos have in the Mexican culture, said ASG president Ani Ajith. It comes down to context and intent.
Yea, I’m thinking of a different battle. The Foreign Legion was heading through Pueblo a year later, but got hit shortly before and that’s where they made their stand.

Too bad Zachary Taylor didn’t finish the job.
Do you think whites will ever just tell these groups to Go F Themselves? Or will ever quit playing this one way race game?
That’s really racist. Are they saying that if only Mexicans drank Swedish vodka they wouldn’t have lost the SW United States? Perhaps the Mexicans aren’t aware that the French now own Absolut Vodka. That’s a real slap given the true meaning of Cinco de Mayo.
There is a two fold irony in the blacks and fried chicken association.
1. Fried chicken is good. I love KFC and so do a whole lot of people.
2. Early in this countries history chicken was expensive. So having a black eat a fried chicken was showing blacks above their proper station in life. IIRC it comes from the movie Birth of a Nation.
I think they are trying to sell Vodka by appealing to the Mexican consumer -- Imagine, in a perfect world: AZTLAN
It's enough to make one puke. I don't often drink vodka, but when I do, I never drink Absolut. Stay thirsty, my friend.
The girl of color, front row third from the left, must be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome living with those vicious bigots.
You are the most interesting man in the world!
LOL - love it!
Never knew that good food of any kind was racial.
The only bad thing about fried chicken is what eating it does to my weight.
My wife & I wanted to try tandoori chicken. An Indian chef’s youtube vid showed us how but he observed that dark meat is costlier in India because it’s moister & has more flavor than white meat, which is more expensive here. Interesting paradox.
ASG President, Ajiht, has a Hindu surname. It always amuses me when some SDS-wannabe group presumes the moral superiority to speak for ‘minority’ groups, even when the minority group is not offended.
perhaps I might wear France’s colors on Cinco De Mayo just to make a point?
