Responding to Georgia's new "guns everywhere" law, Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta has pledged to keep guns out of Catholic churches, schools and other institutions.
...
"Before this legislation takes effect in July, I will officially restrict the presence of weapons in our Catholic institutions except for those carried by the people that civic authorities have designated and trained to protect and guard us, and those who are duly authorized by law and military officials," Gregory wrote.
...
Georgia has always banned licensed weapons in churches, but the new legislation drops the penalty to a $100 fine and the legal charge to a misdemeanor
...
"The last thing we need is more firearms in public places, especially in those places frequented by children and the vulnerable," Gregory wrote.
...
"The version of gun control that passed really offers churches no real protection, other than a fine for those licensed holders who might bring a weapon," Georgia Catholic Conference head Frank Mulcahy told the National Catholic Reporter.
...
"In this nation of ours, they have seldom been the locations where violence has disrupted the otherwise peaceful atmosphere," he added. "Yet even those occasions -- rare as they may be -- are not sufficient reasons to allow people to bring more weapons into God's house."
He charged that the new law "de facto makes firearms more available in places where they may allow violence to escalate."

Love that my pastor knows that I’m armed at all times and blesses it! I’m not the only female at church that’s carrying either. Plenty of men too.
The Archbishop lives (at least for now) in a fancy $2.2 million mansion Another dumb play on his part
But -- as you probably know -- there's a longstanding tradition that arms are not to be carried in Christian churches. In fact, some medieval churches (in Norway, for example) have a kind of balcony or portico around the outside whose purpose was specifically for the men to stack their weapons before entering the sanctuary.
As a counterbalance, read this.
I’d love to the his response to THAT letter
“. . .restrict the presence of weapons in our Catholic institutions except for those carried by the people that civic authorities have designated and trained to protect and guard us,. . “
Sounds like concealed carry license holders to me.
I’ve no problem with this rule, as long as it also applies to police officers.
I agree. It was as much an admonition about his need to publicize this law and how it affects HIS church as is the general belief that priests are homo pedophiles. Frankly it is self aggrandizement and shameless promotion in my opinion - and a human sin.
In reality, an armed worshiper following the dictates of concealed carry would be no more of a threat than he [thinks - or his brother priests] would be even if we couldn’t see what’s happening under his vestments.
IOW, religion is about personal beliefs and connection with God. It does not mandate that some pompous priest, Archibishop, whatever has to make some political point about a basic freedom that is even [arguably] biblically writ “....render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s..... [meaning tribute and to follow basic law]” To include the laws of whatever applicable Caesar [Constitution] we have today..
The Bishop says no to someone being armed in his church? Would someone please remind his excellency that Peter (you know, their 1st Pope) carried a sword? In essence, he is saying Peter ain’t welcome...
Yup. And if I was a CCW holder who attended his services I’d keep carrying. Let them find out and kick me out. Up till that point I’ll be fine. After that, I’d have a new church.
Would be morose that a ccw holder can’t receive communion while abortion lovers can.
I wonder who he voted for in the last two presidential elections?
He is speaking above his pay grade.
When you see that NO Guns allowed sign that’s just showing that the property is a Free Killing Zone.
Just don’t go to an establishment of that type to protect your own safety.
Not everyone who claims to be a Catholic really is one.I give you Kennedy,Kerry and Pelosi as obvious examples. It may even be true that an occasional Bishop/Archbishop fails to follow one or more of the Church's important teachings.Unless he's publicly stated that he did so,nobody can be sure how he voted. If I could easily vote for Condeleeza Rice for President (running as a Republican) then I suspect that the Archbishop didn't necessarily vote for Osama Obama.
Yep. The moron might as well paint concentric circles on his churches.
His call, obviously, but that may negatively affect the attendance at some of the churches in the diocese, now that he’s advertised them as “gun-free zones.”
From the looks of things, I would guess that he’s against guns because guns in the hands of the law abiding thwart thuggery being imposed upon them.
Agreed. If he does this the first little cadre of Islamist whackjobs who want to make a statement will head straight for a Catholic Church.
Child molestors but no guns, Archbishop?
