Gun used in the slaying of girl, 14, 'became a crime gun that ended in tragedy'
Chicago Tribune ^ | 02 may 2014

Jeremy Gorner, Steve Schmadeke and Steve Mills Tribune reporters

Before the 14-year-old girl allegedly fired the shot that killed Endia Martin, the .38-caliber revolver had touched many hands.

A south suburban gun shop known for selling weapons later used in crimes in Chicago. A Hyde Park man whose mother did not want the gun in their home. A former Atlanta man now living on the South Side who would appear to be a middleman of sorts in the gun's journey. The paralyzed uncle of the 14-year-old girl who, prosecutors charged, rode a bus to give the gun to his niece before the fatal confrontation. Someone at the 14-year-old's side at the confrontation who was savvy enough to quickly fix a malfunctioning gun.

And then the suspect, the honors student who authorities say fatally shot 14-year-old Endia for the most mundane of reasons — a fight over a boy.

It began with a legal purchase, according to a lawyer for Robert James, the Hyde Park man whose .38 special revolver was at the center of events leading to Endia's tragic death. It ended with yet another slaying of a Chicago youngster and the wounding of another teen.

It has lead a miserable life and needs a good home. I’ll adopt the poor thing.

Cheers!

20 people standing around watching two teenagers spin out of control ... the gun misfires on the first attempt to shoot ... a bystander takes the gun, clears it, and hands it back to the shooter ... yeah, out of control guns are the problem here.

P.S. - The “lead” was an intentional pun on the word “led.” So, no spelling Nazis need chime in, please.

I think we need to have compassion for this gun. It’s not a bad gun, but a victim — a victim of poverty, and no doubt the victim of racism on the part of stainless steel guns against guns of color —their blued brothers and sisters. The gun deserves another chance! /s

This incident has zero to do with guns. Any weapon could have been used. The story has everything to do with Gangsta Culture and how people are raises.

The old “rouge gun” story. The media dusts this one off every year or so. I remember an entire TV special based on this parable once.

The ministry of propaganda will do anything, other than actually identifying the source of the out of control crime rate in Chicago... The fact that the residents of Chicago keep putting the same evil a$$hats, their cronies, and their spawn, back into office. So their idiotic policies keep getting recycled, and they wonder why they're not working... Well, it's the guns!

If the people of Chicago want to get rid of the crime in Chicago, they'll need to get rid of the politicians that rule the city of Chicago, and the state of IL! Anything else, and wondering why the only changes are for the worse, is the definition of insanity.

The old tired "blame the gun" media drivel. They come up with this crap multiple times every year. Fact remains

I have a S&W 642 Airweight. I do not understand how it could have malfunctioned, was handed to someone else to “fix” it, and it worked when it was handed back. The gun is a DAO revolver. You pull the trigger. There is nothing else to operate. Just pull the trigger. How could it malfunction and be fixed?

I wonder how a .38 revolver malfunctioned. Unless she was just too dumb to pull the trigger, or someone was too dumb to put bullets in it. Mine goes bang every time.

I have four guns hanging around my neighbor. They’ve been slowing down as they go past my house. I think one of them is a handgun. What should I do?

Maybe the fix was reloading empty chambers? That is the only way a revolver misfires.

My CCW piece is a Taurus Ultra Lite .38 revolver, it never jams. When I could no longer rack my automatic, I had to switch to a revolver.

Ashley Nichole (Nikki) Read 8 yrs old. Here is something you can do to help this 8 year old. She has waited 24 yrs for JUSTICE to be carried out. JUST IMAGINE IF SHE WERE YOUR DAUGHTER, GRAND DAUGHTER, SISTER, NIECE.

You do not have to live in TN to call our governor to request justice for Nikki.

TN Gov email is bill.haslam@tn.gov PHONE calls work best 615-741-2001 TN Gov .

This CHILD RAPIST/MURDER HAS RUN OUT OF ALL 20 YRS OF APPEALS, 2 JURIES HANDED DOWN THE DEATH PENALTY, TN GOV Halsam still has NOT SET AN EXECUTION DATE OR SIGNED A DEATH WARRANT, tell him to carry out his Constitutional duty!

This is going on 20 years of appeals. DNA & confession proved he did it.

He raped, strangled to death with her OWN SHOE LACES 8 year old Ashley ‘Nikki’ Read and then threw her body in the river. Even helped hunt for what was thought to be a missing child. Justice has been denied, her mom Debbie still grieves as there is no closure allowed by the Injustice system. She ended up having a nervous break down because it has taken so long and still NO JUSTICE for Nikki.

Calm down, take a deep breath.... then check if any of them are black or high capacity.

--I did read the whole story and posted it mostly as an informative example of lousy reporting.

--I , too wondered how the gun "malfunctioned " compared to a crowd of so-called "people" ---

Wrong ammo, dirty ammo, damaged ammo, high primers, dirty gun all can cause a revolver not to work.

These are not people who clean their guns or take care of them.
