Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked one of President Barack Obama's top legislative priorities, a bill to raise the federal minimum wage for the first time in five years.
On a nearly party-line vote of 54-42, supporters fell short of the 60 votes that would have been needed to end a procedural roadblock against the legislation in the Democratic-led Senate.
Just one Republican, Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, joined Democrats.

Congress needs to cut Bammy’s pay and spread his wealth around. As an example for the others.
I thought the GOP was in the minority in the senate? How do they stop anything????
Now, THAT'S the question that won't be asked on this evenings newscast.
so when they last raised it 5 years ago, what happened? did it lift people out of poverty???
The (formerly 2/3’s - (”In 1975 the Democratic-controlled Senate[5] revised its cloture rule so that three-fifths of the senators sworn (usually 60 senators) could limit debate”) reduced by Mondale ) 60% filibuster rule still applies to many Senate agenda items.
ahh corker. free to pander. i bet there were a bunch of GOPe senators that wanted to vote with corker, but their chamber of commerce masters vetoed that.
“Welcome, valued customer....”
Is he in bed with "Lamar" Alexander?
Note the carefully constructed Rooters headline.
Obama wants to RAISE your wages.
But EEEEEVIL Republicans BLOCKED him from doing so.
It was the RINO from my state, Bob Corker, who voted with the Rats.
The best part was hearing his angry voice on the radio.

Corker and Alexander are the southern version of Arizona’s dynamic duo, McCain and Flake.
Good question.
The bill required 60 votes .. and the dems have only 54. Without enough votes from the repubs - the bill cannot pass.
The only time you can use just the dems (54) is when they vote to approve a nomination; only because Harry Reid changed the rule to allow for it.
Anybody remember what a COW the dems had when the repubs only threatened to do the same ..??
Puhleeeeeeeze!!
Any intelligent person can tell you that in order to run a business, you cannot spend your entire profit on wages. If you believe you can .. go for it.
The money that’s made each month has to pay wages, overhead, equipment, stocking the shelves, etc.
If you raise the wage too high .. you won’t have enough to fill the shelves .. and no stuff .. no sales .. no money to pay wages. GET IT ..??
well FRiend. i’m not arguing for the minimum wage. i think we agree that wage and/or price controls destroy the free market and end up harming the very people politicians pander to.
my point was political, not economic. my comment was directed to human nature, fear and greed, the twin GOPe corruptions. it was more a comment on the political motivations of republicans like corker. and those leftist republicans who normally vote with him but this time steered clear. it will be interesting to see if corker gets the support of the chamber of commerce when he next stands for election; admittedly, tennesseans have a long wait before he stands again.
