LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be suspended for life and fined $2.5 million in response to the racist remarks he allegedly made in a recorded audio clip.
Silver spoke to the press at 11 a.m. news conference from New York, stating he will do everything in my power to force the sale of the Clippers.
The hateful opinions voiced by that man are those of Mr. Sterling. The views expressed by Mr. Sterling are deeply offensive and harmful. That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage, Silver said. I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers association or the NBA. Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, he may not be present at any Clippers facility, and he may not participate in any business or decisions involving the team.

My best friend while attending Beacon Hill Elementary School was the son of the Supersonics' official scorekeeper. I attended many a game back when Walt Hazzard was still Walt Hazzard, and not Mahdi Abdul-Rahman.
What do you watch?
You’re more up-to-date than ESPN, which is still quoting the October 26, 2005, NBA Constitution.
Unlike Baseball, NBA does not have an exemption from anti-trust law.

According to Title 15 U.S. Code § 1291, it appears that they do, along with football and hockey.

No doubt that Seattle is paying attention very closely to this whole incident, playing their cards.....
Basically they’re seizing his property and trying to get it to the guy who set Sterling up?
Charles Barkley said “The NBA is a black league.” Isn’t that discrimination?
It’s getting bad when you can be forced to sell your business for making a private statement. If I was him I’d play the worst players on the team and lose all the rest of the games. If he’s got five white boys, play them only.
I think you are 100% correct. Obviously, Sterling was aware that his girl friend was half black...making her a black person in this society. He is an owner of a sports league where 80% of the players are black and he reportedly was upset that his GM acquired a white player, J.J. Redick, because he, Sterling, didn't think white players were any good.
Now he might actually be a virulent racist, but they are punishing him for what he said in a supposedly private conversation which could have large legal implications. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I agree, smells like a total set up..like a 8 year old would know who Larry Bird is..sounds like she was coached to ask the questions she did, doesn’t justify the fact that Sterling is a moron..he confirmed to the NBA that it was his voice on the tape(He should have denied it) and said what he said are his feelings so there ya go
If every white conservative boycotted the NBA would it make a difference?
The Dodgers and the Giants used to both play in NYC in the National League. The NY Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets play in the Eastern conference of the NBA. What sense would it be for one of the LA teams to play in the Eastern Conference? And if a city can support two teams, who cares? NY Giants and NY Jets in football.
How about part Nets owner Jay-Z wearing a racist medallion to a Nets game? All the people jumping and down and ranting about Sterling said nothing about Jay-Z. But Jay-Z is black. They're all hypocrites.
This is not about sports fans. This is about how, today, a man can be SET UP to blert something that some consider "racist"/"sexist"/"homophobic", and have his business ruined and his life upturned.
This is about Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich. This is about Paula Deen. This is about two guys getting fired for making a dongle joke within hearing of a radical feminist.
This is about something that could happen to any one of us, although probably on a smaller scale. This is about EACH of us being one remark away from being jobless and unemployable. THAT is why it has such traction here.
That exemption applies to broadcasting rights.
He gains nothing by fighting them...where he does have a potential lawsuit is if the price he gets..because of a "forced" sale, is less than what he thought is was worth...he can sue for the difference..but I'll bet the NBA will figure out a may to make it work..look..the team's said to be worth $800 mill..suppose he gets $500 mill for it..that means every owner has to kick in $10 mill..about what they pay for a bench player for one year..and it all goes away...they want to look like heroes..and not have questions asked why they let him go on so for many years.
Also, Sterling's old....he has to start thinking about estate planning..and remember, if he wants to leaved it to his family...the ban only applies to him...the league still has to approve ANY new owner..even a family member..
Prediction...they 'll have a prospective buyer, or more than one..to announce right after the playoffs are over..
Thank you. That is why it resonates.
What do you mean "right around the corner"? It's here, now.
What do you call those bakers being persecuted because they would not cater a gay wedding? What do you call the Mozilla CEO being fired over his donating in favor of traditional marriage? It's happening now. If you do not submit, they will destroy you.
