Cliven was winning the PR battle. Whether he is racist or not is not important. What was not smart is to throw race into the conversation. It was totally unnecessary.

They threw race in because Bundy was winning the PR battle with We the People. Harry Reid is one vindictive sob and is bound and determined to see Cliven’s ranch to the ChiComs and line his pockets.
They demonized Bundy just liked they did Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, Reagan - etc. All GOOD, all TRUTH - none must stand, lest the emperor be seen for what he is — a shallow little thin-skinned man masquerading as a president - and the Totalitarians be exposed for all to see.
Oh, and Bundy broke yet another law - he did not shim-sham around with PCO terms, he just told it like it is. Boy, they really cannot stand that.

He's not running some popularity contest on PR contest. He commented on out of control federal govenrment who's got half those in all the big cities and elsewhere on a short leash, suckling on the government boob...At tax payer expense.
