Regardless, we do pride ourselves in honesty here at Free Republic, and I am forced to admit that during his second term Reagan signed some real stink bomb budgets. And he allowed some really stupid things to happen (how about repealing the ITC tax credit - eight months into the tax year!)
I think some of the physical problems that would take him from us were already starting to affect his strength during his second term. Really sad, because Regan's first term was magnificent!
This is counter to what history proves. Reagan came into office with a huge inflation percentage and a very large debt. He lowered taxes and in a short time reversed all that. The economy Clinton came into was Reagan’s doing. Carter was a complete disaster when it came to the economy. I cannot think of anyone worse.
This won’t be popular, but I don’t see a huge problem with this statement. Reagan was great on tax cuts and growing the overall economy. As far as the overall budget goes however, it didn’t get smaller. It grew just like under every other President. Deficits also exploded under Reagan. Of course, he also had to contend with a Democrat congress.
He was the best President of my lifetime, but he wasn’t perfect.
