Students Demand Acknowledgement of Robert E. Lee's 'Racist and Dishonorable Conduct'

A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee's "dishonorable side."

According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves 'The Committee,'" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day."

The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st.

They added: "The time has come for us, as students, to ask that the university hold itself responsible for its past and present dishonorable conduct and for the racist and dishonorable conduct of Robert E. Lee."

The neighbors of this woman said she picked up trash in the neighborhood and mowed a vacant lot next to her home. Since they don’t mention the race you may assume they are black. There were some white women interviewed who said “We will get them.” They sounded very serious. I hope they get them before the cops do.

Both grew up in Virginia and understand the culture but also know that history needs to be presented in its context.

From the article: "Both (2 members of the "Committee") grew up in Virginia and understand the culture but also know that history needs to be presented in its context."

This Yank now a VA resident who loves the history of this state demands an apology.

At my alma mater next door at VMI, we celebrated our Civil War history. Although most of the black cadets chose to opt out of marching in the annual New Market Day parade when the corps of cadets was called into battle on May 15th, 1864.

I did see that when I read the article. It said one was from Richmond. Figures. The other one is probably from NoVa.

Let whomever among you whose ancestors never owned nor benefited from slave labor cast the first condemnation.

I got to know why they want to go to a racist school, too. That would be like whites going to Mandela and Obama University and demanding they are racist.(Of course, they are.) Or conservatives going to Lenin Stalin Mao Obama University of Marxist theory.

Those blacks should transfer to The Black Welcoming Western Washington University. They might be happy there...

Then again, maybe not...

The Dumbasses need to take some remedial history courses away from Marxist. Racism as it is known today existed in the north and south all the way up to POTUS before, during, and after the Civil War. The Civil War was a war over economics and states rights to self rule. Slavery was legal in many states in the north up to the day of the first shots fired. Many of the Generals on both sides of the war were former West Point Classmates and settled their differences after the war. That included Grant and Lee. Also ignored in modern history is the fact Lincoln was a segregationist. His intentions or his idea was to return slaves to nation of origin.

From Lee's Wikipedia article, which is surprisingly well-written;
In his public statements and private correspondence, Lee argued that a tone of reconciliation and patience would further the interests of white Southerners better than hotheaded antagonism to federal authority or the use of violence. Lee repeatedly expelled white students from Washington College for violent attacks on local black men, and publicly urged obedience to the authorities and respect for law and order. In 1869–70 he was a leader in successful efforts to establish state-funded schools for blacks. He privately chastised fellow ex-Confederates such as Jefferson Davis and Jubal Early for their frequent, angry responses to perceived Northern insults, writing in private to them as he had written to a magazine editor in 1865, that "It should be the object of all to avoid controversy, to allay passion, give full scope to reason and to every kindly feeling. By doing this and encouraging our citizens to engage in the duties of life with all their heart and mind, with a determination not to be turned aside by thoughts of the past and fears of the future, our country will not only be restored in material prosperity, but will be advanced in science, in virtue and in religion."
Knee-jerk liberals who can only bleat a simplistic mantra of "Confederacy equals bad!" don't have an actual clue at all about the life and wisdom of general Lee.

President Dwight Eisenhower wrote the following letter in response to one he received dated August 1, 1960, from Leon W. Scott, a dentist in New Rochelle, New York. Scott’s letter reads:

August 1, 1960

Dear Mr. President:

At the Republican Convention I heard you mention that you have the pictures of four (4) great Americans in your office, and that included in these is a picture of Robert E. Lee.

I do not understand how any American can include Robert E. Lee as a person to be emulated, and why the President of the United States of America should do so is certainly beyond me.

The most outstanding thing that Robert E. Lee did was to devote his best efforts to the destruction of the United States Government, and I am sure that you do not say that a person who tries to destroy our Government is worthy of being hailed as one of our heroes.

Will you please tell me just why you hold him in such high esteem?

Sincerely yours,

Leon W. Scott

Eisenhower’s response, written on White House letterhead, reads as follows:

August 9, 1960

Dear Dr. Scott:

Respecting your August 1 inquiry calling attention to my often expressed admiration for General Robert E. Lee, I would say, first, that we need to understand that at the time of the War Between the States the issue of Secession had remained unresolved for more than 70 years. Men of probity, character, public standing and unquestioned loyalty, both North and South, had disagreed over this issue as a matter of principle from the day our Constitution was adopted.

General Robert E. Lee was, in my estimation, one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America; he was thoughtful yet demanding of his officers and men, forbearing with captured enemies but ingenious, unrelenting and personally courageous in battle, and never disheartened by a reverse or obstacle. Through all his many trials, he remained selfless almost to a fault and unfailing in his belief in God. Taken altogether, he was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history.

From deep conviction I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee’s caliber would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the nation’s wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.

Such are the reasons that I proudly display the picture of this great American on my office wall.

Sincerely,

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Indeed. It makes for a very nice campus where everyone is trustworthy and honorable in their dealings with one another, in part, I suppose, because of the draconian nature of the penalty.

But it’s sort of nice to be able to leave all your stuff in the library and come back a few days later and it’s still sitting there.

I think it works because the students take it seriously. There aren’t but a handful of charges each year—maybe 5 or 6, and the whole time I was there, I think there was only one trial. It works.
