Michelle Obama says high school not good enough, 'you have to go to college'
The Washington Examiner's Washington Secrets ^ | April 17, 2014 | Paul Bedard

Having a high school diploma isn’t good enough to make it anymore, first lady Michelle Obama warned high school and college students at Howard University.

“No longer is high school the bar. That is not enough in today’s globalizing economy. You have got to go to college, or get some kind of professional training beyond college,” she said Thursday.

It was the first of what is likely to be many more speeches on education as the first family readies for retirement and takes up helping younger Americans, especially blacks get a leg up.

“One of the things that Barack and I are focusing on and will be focusing on for the rest of our lives, quite frankly, is making sure that young people understand the importance of an education. And that means education beyond high school,” she said.

A new Pew Research poll found that there was a big earnings gap between those with a high school degree and those with a college certificate. Pew said that those who only graduated high school earned 62 percent of a college graduate.

At Howard she was promoting the president’s goal of getting back to being the nation with the most college graduates in the world. “It’s called his North Star Goal,” said the first lady. “We were at the top years back, but now we’ve fallen very far behind the rest of the world.”

And if you can get Uncle Sugar to pay for it under affirmative action, that's more better!

Just having a college degree means nothing if it is not for a job in demand. A history major or a major in “women’s studies” is practically worthless. A business major isn’t much better.

This college thing, it is an inalienable right, it is right there in the Constitution, in three... two... one....

My father never went to high school or college and he was the sharpest guy I ever met.

There is no guarantee a college education makes someone more intelligent, let alone decent.

Can they both just go away?

I know a businessman with a 9th grade education that runs a very successful operation. He understands the meaning of ‘earned success’.
It is all about ‘finding a need and filling it’ and doing it better than the competition. It’s not rocket science.
I do wish there were more electricians around, too.

Once upon a time, having a college degree meant something. Now, with the perception that “everyone” is getting one, it no longer seems to be anything special.

I know dozens of high school drop-out, high school grad, GED and college drop-out millionaires and I’ll bet everyone here does, too. In my experience as a sales recruiter, I’ve found that high school level people often make better salespeople. I don’t know what they’re doing to people in college these days, but it’s sure goofing them up in sales.

I have always contended that it is a mistake for schools and society in general to push everyone toward a college education. I believe in balance.

Every city and region with a population to support it, should have a combined high school - junior college (grades 11,12,13,14)level - a technical school - to teach all the trades, drafting, culinary arts, bookkeeping, office skills, and on and on.

Colleges and universities are killing the country.

I see college grads today who think the USA is a democracy and George Washington was the first president. Then there is basic English, and math, and simple things like how a lightbulb works.

Oh yeah college has become a discriminator of knowledge.

The idea is to ensnare as many as possible into federal student loans for useless degrees.

In Des Moines they had a technical high school housed in an old Ford Model T plant. It trained thousands of people to become successful electricians, woodworkers, plumbers and etc. In the 1980’s they transformed it in an advanced placement magnet school, which is fine, but who will train the nurses, tradesmen and the like?
