Tilikum Crossing: Referencing a Native American term for 'common people.'

The bridge is part of a new $1.5 billion, 7-mile Portland-Milwaukie light rail line. The bridge will be the largest in the nation to carry transit, pedestrians, bikes but no private cars or trucks.
The bridge was estimated to cost $134 million and was expected to open in Sept. of 2015.

I don’t hear a lot of cheering from those the politicians refer to as the “common people.” LOL!
Bridge of the People.....ahahahaha
I guess “The People’s Bridge” would have been too in yout face?
And where did the $134 million come from? Gas Taxes? Whose paying cost and upkeep, private car and trucks...?
Almost all American Indian names for themselves mean “The People” when translated into English.
He was overwhelmingly the most popular choice, with around 5 percent of public vote. A Facebook page in support of the choice also has nearly 1,500 likes.
Proponents of the name suggested a Kirk Reeves bridge would bring attention to, and perhaps eradicate, Portlands suicide problem.
Chet Orloff, a local historian and chair of TriMets Bridge Naming Committee, said the selection determination was "not a popularity contest."
According to Orloff, most of the submissions received did not fit the guidelines set by the committee. Criteria included the names historical significance, special cultural meaning and sound/ring/flow.
convenient for this bunch Id guess.
How special—a bridge of the ‘little people’, so every time you ride or walk across it you can be reminded you’re one of the ‘little people’, who of course, as Leona Helmesley pointed out are the ones who pay taxes. For bridges like this.
$134M HaHaHaHa right!
Portland (also called Portlandia for its crazy liberal free-wheeling sexual ways) has a large sodomite population. The Oregonian newspaper says the original spelling of the selection was “Tilicum” which would have been embraced by that group. After some consideration, the selection committee decided on a less sexual connotation and changed the spelling to “Tilikum.” It all depends on the pronunciation!
Hope it doesn’t reprise the one that blew down.
Folks in an outlying county (Clackamas) who have to pay for the light-rail transit that will use the bridge went to court to stop it and for good measure recalled the commissioners who voted to approve the project. Though the commissioners were booted, the courts refused to stop the project which will be completed next year.
In a similar move, the transit district wanted to extend the service across a new bridge over the Columbia River to Vancouver, Washington. The light-rail service was to be shared on the bridge with I-5 highway traffic. The residents on the WA side of the river also revolted and so far the sharing scheme has been stopped.
Oh my, oh MY!!
thinking the same thing.. So, when there’s no money to repair the roads vehicles use, will the gasoline tax be increased?
Thank you.
Portland the port-a-potty
(Sigh). It’s such a basically northwest thing to do: spend 124 million dollars on a bridge that doesn’t serve people.
Oh, sure... Maybe a couple dozen people will walk over the bridge every day. It has light rail, so that’s about double the number of walkers. Yippee.
They’ve replaced one bus, or a dozen canoes with a 124 million dollar bridge.
Tilikum?
as in “’til ‘e come”?
