WASHINGTON Driven by a last-minute flood of enrollments, particularly in California, sign-ups for health insurance through the Affordable Care Acts online marketplaces hit 8 million in the laws first year, President Obama announced Thursday.
That beats the forecast by 1 million people and caps a remarkable comeback from a disastrous rollout last fall that gave rise to predictions the law would collapse in its maiden year.
Instead, the health law, often called Obamacare, has helped bring about the largest increase in insurance coverage in the U.S. in half a century.
This thing is working, Obama said from the White House briefing room, taking a jab at Republican critics who continue to pledge to roll back the law. The repeal debate is, and should be, over.
California alone signed up more than 200,000 consumers for coverage in the last two weeks, the state announced Thursday, bringing the state's first-year total to nearly 1.4 million people, many more than any other state.
Millions more Americans have signed up for health insurance without using the marketplaces, including through Medicaid, employers or directly from insurers. That has helped to dramatically drive down the nations uninsured rate, according to a growing number of national surveys.
Estimates of the total gain in insurance coverage nationally are still preliminary. And enrollment is continuing on several state insurance marketplaces, which have extended their deadlines past the April 15 date used by California and the marketplaces operated by the federal government in 36 states.

I don't even believe that. It's just a made up number. The MSM is regurgitating that the emperor has a fine set of clothes. They can see the obaummunist's ass hanging out and won't even comment on it, let alone verify the claim that there's coverage.
re : my number 2 above, all indications are that the proportions of high pay and/or low medical usage vs. low pay (high public subsidy) and/or high medical usage are going to be badly skewed from what the numbers need to be if Obamacare were to have even a sliver of hope to work as advertisd.
There will be far too many with high subsidies and far too many with high medical need, because those are the categories of people who will sign up in very disproportionate numbers.
Obamacare is bankrupt before it starts, so next the Demagogues will have to increase their raids on the Treasury aka print and borrow more money.
Verify BEFORE trust.
I NEVER trust our government or a MARXIST pResident.
200 million or so people have paid thir taxes. This IRS thing is working!
#idiot
The big lie repeated often enough.......
You’re quoting numbers from a liberal think tank, and linking to the Forbes “from the left” columnist? Excuse me if I don’t leap right into finding that persuasive.
They signed up at the end of a barrel, and threat of prison. IT’S WORKING!
Let’s see now, 8 million out of 318 million is a real avalanche of support!
Let’s see now, 8 million out of 318 million is a real avalanche of support!
Another Obama lie in progress!
I heard the Obama statement and he said that “8 Million had now purchased insurance in the marketplace”...so that may not be all in Obama Care because the insurance companies are still selling policies outside of the Obama Care Website, or does he consider their website the only Marketplace?
What about the 6 million who lost their insurance, and those yet to come. WE spent billions to be no better off in the numbers than before this monstrosity. Hell it would have been better to write a check to the uninsured to buy their own, or give them the tax credit to buy their own. Of course, he and the dems could not have lined their pockets, and those of their political donors.
Let’s see...
The original [stated] objective was to insure 40+ million uninsured people who supposedly wanted and needed this law in order to afford to get insured,
and under threat of property confiscation, jail, and gunpoint,
they have [reportedly] 1/5 of that number?
Yeah... “working”.
Since they could have provide tax credits for insurance premiums at about 1/3 of what was spent,
without the intrusiveness and control over our medical system,
it’s obvious that the intrusiveness and control were the ACTUAL goal.
Oh I agree, but I like to keep reminding people how simple it could have been...lest anyone forget how greedy and controlling the left is. We know the left has lurkers here.
The change in selling insurance across state lines like auto insurance would have lowered costs for many Americans. So tax credits, and across state lines would have been simple fixes that would not have cost us, like you said, more than a third of what we now have in this boondoggle known as Obama Care.
I think the right decisions would have saved and created jobs and saved the insured from all these debilitating costs when their health insurance was cancelled, because so many families cannot afford the new premiums.
