WASHINGTON Driven by a last-minute flood of enrollments, particularly in California, sign-ups for health insurance through the Affordable Care Acts online marketplaces hit 8 million in the laws first year, President Obama announced Thursday.
That beats the forecast by 1 million people and caps a remarkable comeback from a disastrous rollout last fall that gave rise to predictions the law would collapse in its maiden year.
Instead, the health law, often called Obamacare, has helped bring about the largest increase in insurance coverage in the U.S. in half a century.
This thing is working, Obama said from the White House briefing room, taking a jab at Republican critics who continue to pledge to roll back the law. The repeal debate is, and should be, over.
California alone signed up more than 200,000 consumers for coverage in the last two weeks, the state announced Thursday, bringing the state's first-year total to nearly 1.4 million people, many more than any other state.
Millions more Americans have signed up for health insurance without using the marketplaces, including through Medicaid, employers or directly from insurers. That has helped to dramatically drive down the nations uninsured rate, according to a growing number of national surveys.
Estimates of the total gain in insurance coverage nationally are still preliminary. And enrollment is continuing on several state insurance marketplaces, which have extended their deadlines past the April 15 date used by California and the marketplaces operated by the federal government in 36 states.

LA Times. Oh boy ...
Depends on how you define “is”....
Still no definite word on exactly how many of these enrollees have actually enrolled by paying for their selected plans, nor how many were previously uninsured.
WHY DON’T THEY GIVE OUT THESE ALL IMPORTANT DATA?
Obama did reveal some demographics, however, informing us that 35 percent of the signups were from people under the age of 35.
Next question: Will this 8 million figure (if true) make the REPEAL movement more difficult?
The key is what % PAID.
The longer this thing gets entrenched, no matter how disastrous, the harder it will be to get rid of.
And it WILL get disastrous.
Subject: The enormity of World War II
During the 3-1/2 years of World War 2 that started with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and ended with the Surrender of Germany and Japan in 1945, the U.S. produced 22 aircraft carriers, 8 battleships, 48 cruisers, 349 destroyers, 420 destroyer escorts, 203 submarines, 34 million tons of merchant ships, 100,000 fighter aircraft, 98,000 bombers, 24,000 transport aircraft, 58,000 training aircraft, 93,000 tanks, 257,000 artillery pieces, 105,000 mortars, 3,000,000 machine guns, and 2,500,000 military trucks.
We put 16.1 million men in uniform in the various armed services, invaded Africa, invaded Sicily and Italy, won the battle for the Atlantic, planned and executed D-Day, marched across the Pacific and Europe, developed the atomic bomb and ultimately conquered Japan and Germany.
It's worth noting, that during the almost exact amount of time, the Obama administration couldn't build a functioning web site.
So, 8 million people tapped on a few computer keys. That’s all.
It’s amazing how people will cooperate when the President Of The United States threatens to label them as law breakers, fine them, and use the criminals in the IRS to take their money if they don’t do as he says.
Yeah, and the more it “works,” the unhealthier and broker we will be. Higher costs, higher taxes, fewer providers, less care now. Rationing and death panels to follow.
And they’ll never talk about how many of those who signed up are already slipping through the wide cracks in CommieCare.
He makes these things up on the fly or else gets them from Bob Beckel in the morning briefing,
Next week 15M will have signed up...
As believable as anything else they have said up to now.
I bet we eventually find a concerted effort, like an ACORN movement, that was just signing up “Mickey Mouse” and “Bruce Banner” for Obamacare, totalling hundreds of thousands of fake enrollees.
It’s working as well as Andre’s Johnson.
And that anyone who begs to differ is a racist hater.
In business, it is all about the net. So how many people lost their coverage or were severely downgraded to get these 8 million signups?
How many of these were Medicare/Medicaid? did those count?
How many paid?
How many (especially in CA) are illegals?
