Putin Asserts Right To Use Force In Eastern Ukraine
The New York Times ^ | April 17, 2014 | By David M. Herszenhorn

MOSCOW -- President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia emphasized on Thursday that the upper chamber of the Russian Parliament had authorized him to use military force if necessary in eastern Ukraine, and also stressed Russia's historical claim to the territory, repeatedly referring to it as "new Russia" and saying that only "God knows" why it became part of Ukraine.

Speaking in a televised question-and-answer show, Mr. Putin also admitted for the first time that Russian armed forces had been deployed in Crimea, the disputed peninsula that Russia annexed last month immediately after a large majority of the population voted in a referendum to secede from Ukraine.

He would be stupid to get more, in the end, it would be more of a headache to deal with the rest of the country than it would be worth to him.

Like I said when he took Crimea, it does no good to have a warm water port if you don’t have a land route to get there. You just need to look at a map to know he wasn’t done.

What about Novorossiysk, which is Russia's main port on the Black Sea? In 2003, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree setting up a naval base for the Black Sea Fleet in Novorossiysk. Russia has allocated 12.3 billion rubles (about $480 million) for the construction of the new base between 2007 and 2012. The construction of other facilities and infrastructure at the base, including units for coastal troops, aviation and logistics, will continue beyond 2012.

The Russian lease on port facilities in Sevastopol, which, though the main base of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, is part of Ukraine, was set to expire in 2017. Ukraine was reported to be planning to not renew the lease; however, in April 2010 the Russian and Ukrainian presidents signed an agreement to extend the lease by twenty-five years, with an option of further extension of five years after the new term expires.

Also remember, with the situation in Syria being unstable, the Russian base at Tartus is in some jeopardy, which makes the bases in the Black Sea much more critical.

Hardline Soviet Communist? What gives you that impression? The only hardline Soviet Communist I know about is the one in the White House.

Obama = the worst

Carter eventually recognized and admitted his mistakes, and made some major policy reversals in 1980. to little and too late, but the change of mind was there.

obama has been president for 5+ years and he just gets stupider and stupider

Exactly. It’s wrong to try to frame Putin in any context that is not of Russian nature. The Hitler comparisons are just flat out wrong. Hitler was not the first, nor the last leader who tried to gain territory.

I think you're absolutely right here. Compare him to Peter the Great or even Catherine the Great if you want an historical analogy. Putin's acting as a Russian nationalist, even an imperialist. He has dreams of reviving Russian greatness.

It's really disengenous to compare Putin to Hitler while Svboda clowns are goosestepping around Kiev giving Nazi salutes.

“It should be noted Putin stressed again the use of force in Ukraine would be a very last resort. Obviously, all legal and diplomatic means to attain a political solution would have to be exhausted first.”

Anyone but me noting how much this sounds like Obama just before Libya, and Syria?

It’s wrong to try to frame Putin in any context that is not of Russian nature.

As a friend of mine said after taking a Russian history class, "The Russians have always been the Russians."

If you want to read a good book about Russian expansionism in the 18th and 19th Centuries, "The Great Game" by Peter Hopkirk is a terrific read. The usual pattern for absorbing Central Asia from the shores of the Caspian to the borders of China and Afghanistan was to send traders, then send soldiers to protect the traders while insisting loudly that they had no intentions of taking the area. Then the local commander would sieze control on some pretext of a threat to the traders or soldiers and, while Moscow swore that they hadn't planned this, they would proceed to absorb the territory. The British would be outraged and the Russians would swear it wouldn't happen again. Then traders would start moving into the next khanate.

Or as Churchill put it, “I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma: but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest.”

Let’s conquer Russia. Our ancestors, including many redheads, stopped there numerous times on the way from Siberia. Our allies and cousins, the Mongols, were also there and should be notified and included. And the Chinese, since they’re all part Mongolian (see Khans, Manchus, all). The U.S.A. and its new allies should find out how truly well built the latest Russian junk is.

Good one! So very true! We have way more to fear from 0dumb0, Holder, Skerry & Hillary, than we do Putin! At least Putin is an ardent nationalist & supporter of his own country. That is WAY more than I can say for 0dumb0 & the demoCRAP party or GOP-e, who are doing everything they can to destroy America.
