For a radical progressive who once harbored negative stereotypes about folks on the right, it was a turning point for me: Though Sean Hannity or Sarah Palin and I disagree profoundly on politics they're personable, kind, and human. If you want to persuade people, you cant demonize them.
In the fall of 2013, I gave a TED talk on what I learned as a progressive, on-air talking head at Fox News, where I worked for two years before leaving and joining my current home, CNN. After all, one of the most frequent questions I was asked during my time at Fox was how I did it, how I was a fox in the henhouse or a hen in the Fox house, if you will.
The questions came mostly from fellow liberals who had not watched much Fox News but had seen the most outlandish clips of Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity that had made it to "The Daily Show" or YouTube. They perhaps imagined that walking down the hallway outside makeup, Mr. O'Reilly might yell then, too, instead of just saying hello. That's a funny notion, but it couldn't be further from the truth.
My time at Fox News was marked by meeting and working with some of the kindest, smartest, and most talented people I've had the pleasure of meeting in life. As I said in my TED talk, Sean Hannity is one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet and even now that I've parted ways with Fox, he remains a good friend and mentor.

So,...Sally, when will you rejoin FOX?
Yeah it’s almost like we’re humans but with stupid ideas.
She will take some crap for this. Has to be hard to find out people you are supposed to hate and deride are nice people.
Being a leftist, you must demonize and seek to destroy personally the opposition because that is the only way to win.
Funny she never mentioned her TED talk.....
What’s kinda funny about this is I’ve rubbed elbows with a LOT of liberals in Seattle. Many of them had a surface niceness, but it was a VERY thin shell. Some of these people truly were monstrous in their perspectives. But I suppose that is true of some “rank and file” conservatives.
I’ll say this: Though conservatives can use ad-hominem attacks from time to time, on the sites I frequent where both sides co-exist, it is the liberal MO. No question.
A couple thoughts...
1) Fox News is hardly conservative. It’s mostly a center right network more closely aligned with the GOPe than real conservatives. They only SEEM conservative because in an ocean of leftist/Democrat media propagandists, Fox News dares present the GOPe view.
2) Yes, conservatives are generally God-fearing nice people. Mark Levin comes to mind as a perfect example. He can go on a tirade against leftism/statism with the best of them, but listen sometime and see how absolutely nice and polite he is to liberal guests (when they dare go onto his show). He also doesn’t interrupt them constantly like many hosts on the left (and—unfortunately—some on the right, too).
fox news is too NYC centric.
they have too many alternative lifestyle sympathies to be trustworthy.
oreily is just a tabloid tv huckster to be trusted.
errrr...What is a “TED” talk?
Thanx.
And what I just learned is how amazed I am that you were surprised by this.
WOW who knew..you mean, we are HUMAN..thanks for the compliment Sally I had no idea/sarc
Sorry, Sally, but at CNN you will experience quite the opposite: Unbridled hate, envy, greed, and backstabbing.
Maybe you should thing on that once you experience the contrast...
Leftists are never kind, personable OR human!!
Why would anybody name his son “Sally”?
think*
Not being a bureaucrat, I have no idea what the hell a TED talk is. Have a active imagination and this being Sally Kohn I can only assume, a TED talk is a speech telling friends and cohorts what it was like screwing around with good old TEDdy K. Plus as many times as she mentioned it, I can only assume she is proud of it.
How "crippled" is a government which spends FOUR TRILLION dollars per year?
As for the concern about corporations, virtually all of them are for sale at fair market prices in several stock markets. One can either choose to buy them and change their behavior or buy them and benefit from that behavior. I'd like to know why that is not enough.
The answer I am confident is that progressives believe that there is just one large pie and a person either has a large slice or a small slice. It never occurs to them that pies can be made through work and sacrifice, or that a person who does just that deserves the reward for that work and sacrifice.
All conservatives are racists and evil in leftist bizarro world. She probably still thinks that, but she’s into leftist evangelism, and is willing to tolerate those things in the hope of change.
RE: Why would anybody name his son Sally?
A backgrounder for those who want to know:
http://www.ted.com/speakers/sally_kohn
Sally Kohn has a powerful vision for a more united United States. On Fox News, this progressive lesbian has sparred with some of the most conservative minds on television, and has sifted through hundreds of letters of hate mail a day. But she deeply believes in finding our common humanity, political differences aside. Before we can achieve political correctness, we must first establish emotional correctness and this will ignite conversations that lead to real change.
Kohn has appeared on Fox, MSNBC and CNN, and has written for The Daily Beast, Salon, The Atlantic and TIME Magazine.
