The Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas released a chilling video in the hopes that it will help lead to the identity of a suspect who crept through a couple’s home and loomed over their baby as he slept.

The incident, which occurred on April 5, was captured by the homeowner’s security cameras situated throughout the home, including in the baby’s nursery.

Ex-cons who now do public service teaching people what burglars avoid most during robberies list DOGS as #1.

I can confirm that this is true! Every criminology course I've ever audited showed that criminals will actively avoid homes with dogs. Unless you have a stockpile of gold or something someone REALLY wants, you will not be randomly victimized if there's a dog in your home.

Oftentimes burglars will case neighborhoods before making their move. If they see you have a dog, and esp. if it's over 50 lb., they will move along. This is discussed and proven in almost every entry-level criminology course.

We use our garage. Our cars are never in the driveway so you can’t tell if we are home or not. Almost noone else in the neighborhood uses their garage for parking. They all use it for storing JUNK! They’ll leave a $50k car in the driveway and store junk in the garage. Stupid.
We also have a video system and an alarm system. If they ever actually make it in the house they are dead. We also have a dog but she will bark at anything so is not much help. Lol

You are the smart ones--no one knows if you are home or not.

One of the BETTER inventions was the timer to switch the lights on and off when out. No one knows if I am home or not. That IS the idea, isn't it?

Yes, the junk in the garage. Some people are keepers. I am like my father, a thrower-away person. So, my two cars fit in their garage spaces.

Why do so many folks keep so much junk? I never could figure it out. My mother kept stuff and didn't even know what she had after a while. She wouldn't throw stuff away.

Looks female-ish. Hair appears to be tucked up under the back of the hat.

My daughter has a 77 lb Ridgeback and a 65 lb pit mix. They are the quietest, sweetest dogs you can imagine. Both well trained and quite loyal. But if someone they don’t know comes in the yard (their territory), well if I was a stranger & stuck my head in the window, I would high tail it out of there.

As back up, a Remington shotgun, a 9mm and a 38 spl. And professional training on all.

I feel so much better with her living in a city, that she is well defended.

You weren't “easy pickin’s.” THAT what the burglars look for.

It's all SLOTH on the part of your neighbors. They paid the price for their laziness and now have to go through the trauma of dealing with their insurance companies.

THEN when their insurance rates go up they will scream bloody murder because "it wasn't my fault."

I think they did, in our case.

The neighbor’s copper was a huge roll of wire which even we did not know he had.

It was hanging on his wall with his mower bag covering it.

If the thieves had known about *that*, they surely saw the two huge Dobes in my yard.

The neighbor has a dog too but she’s very small and kept in her crate at night.

There’s a couple signs on the fence and house and they all involve meeting your end via gun or dog and I reckon that’s why we were passed by.

Your hubby is correct. Besides having a dog gives the cop something to shoot other than you, your hubby or any offspring...

And a baseball bat in the master bedroom.

I used to think a bat or a bayonet was enough, but as I've gotten older, I've come to the conclusion that maybe I'm not the threat I once was, and I needed a "standoff weapon", so now I have a .45 ACP, and too bad for any burglar, etc. but the price you pay for breaking into my house has gone up.

I am sure the cameras were to keep an eye on babysitters or a Nanny.

Yep, the alarm is now necessary.

Good luck with the sporting equipment.

I’ll make a different set of plans ... effective plans.

It’s all fine until a neighbors chihuahua gets in the yard and the big dog gets a hold of that intruder

Crazy thing is, even my parents got hit and dad was the one who taught *me* about home security and criminals, himself having been a prison guard for over 30 years.

Now that he’s gone, my mom just has an electronic gizmo that “barks” at people who come to the house.

She hates dogs and won’t even consider getting one so I don’t know what more to do for her.

The gizmo sure does sound like a pack of vicious dogs but it’s not anything I’d be comfortable depending on.

:-\

Colt 1911 .45 loaded with Glaser safety slugs. Better choice.

Ok....this is a good thread to ask:

WHat is a good indoor, small, barky dog for raising the alarm?

What is a good indoor-outdoor, medium to large dog for 1) raising the alarm, and 2) good defensive skillsets, yet good with family....(looking at czech or hungarian gsds).

I’m not shooting a firearm (especially a shotgun??) toward an occupied crib. I’m gonna crush that creep’s skull with a bat, drag his ass into the hallway and then shoot him if he twitches.

I feel so much better with her living in a city, that she is well defended.

Good for you for teaching her right.

People haven't changed ONE iota in all of human history.
What HAS changed is that women of all ages now live alone. That never happened much before. They are perceived to be defenseless, helpless and "easy pickins'."
I remember when I lived alone. I make sure I got acquainted with the nosiest neighbors, never brought men up to my place, made sure my date or the taxi driver SAW ME IN TO MY HOME and had a handful of friends who checked up on me (and visa versa).

I also married a VERY protective husband. :o) I got to see him in action TWICE. His mean "I'm going to kill you" look stopped two such attacks. It was beautiful to behold.

He WAS brought up in Oakland, California and played basketball with his local high school team. He was a white boy but tough as nails.
