A rapid shift to wind and solar power is needed if the world is to avoid catastrophic global warming, the United Nations warns in a crucial report today.
Emissions of greenhouse gases need to be cut by up to 70 per cent before 2050 to control climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says.
Large-scale changes in energy systems are required, with coal power stations to be switched off and replaced by wind and solar.
And the transformation needs to be made in the next 15 years or controlling climate change will become increasingly harder and more expensive.
The report was published in Berlin today after a week of line-by-line drafting and re-drafting.
The final version, written by 235 international scientists and economists, says that efforts so far have failed to stop spiralling emissions of greenhouse gases which have risen to unprecedented levels in the past decade....

Hitler said that a truly huge lie can never be totally put to rest or killed off, that some part of it would always linger on....
UN scientists have contributed NOTHING.
No, it won’t put oil out. The stuff I’ve read says it costs about 6-8 bucks a gallon to make, oil is cheaper.
Nice!
I live in a valley, just three miles north of Wiesbaden, Germany, with a fair-sized hill behind me. It’s come up that the windmill folks would like to put up a couple of windmills on this ridgeline of the hill. Oddly enough, this has gotten the entire city council of Wiesbaden (mostly all liberals)....all hyped up and angry. This would disturb the natural look of the hills overlooking the city.
Adding to the fight, the city has taken up this UNESCO-identified world-site status application. To fit into the ‘spa-category’ (yeah there is such a lofty status)....you need to stay pure, in terms of scenery and views. So they are using this angle to further the fight against the windmill guys.
You can’t find any significant city in Germany today that readily accepts the windmills. As long as you build them out in the far rural areas...it’s ok. Beyond that....it’s a fight. Well...to get the right wind currents and make a 365-day-a-year sustainable profit...you have to build on ridgelines.
Bottom line? All of the socialists who call for global warming comments....fighting the windmills.
Isn’t it too late already??
U.N. OFFICIAL PREDICTS DISASTER SAYS GREENHOUSE EFFECT COULD WIPE SOME NATIONS OFF MAP - entire nations could be wiped off the face of the earth by rising sea levels if global warming is not reversed by the year 2000. Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of “eco-refugees,” threatening political chaos, said Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program. He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect - Associated Press June 30, 1989
Environmental refugees to top 50 million in 5 years —”There are well-founded fears that the number of people fleeing untenable environmental conditions may grow exponentially as the world experiences the effects of climate change and other phenomena,” says UNU-EHS Director Janos Bogardi. - United Nations University news release - October 11, 2005
Global Warming is good
People live naturally in warmer climate.
Higher levels of sea can be and are already being diverted into the deserts and turning them into arable land.
And destroy all cattle ranches because of their methane production.
For us to shut down so much that we could powerthe rest on solar andwind would be a disaster of a scope thawt would dwarf any purported effects of global warming.
And how much of the stock in solar and wind companies do these “scientists” control - I bet they stand to make a pretty penny when coal has been driven out of business.
Berlin makes people excitable and power crazy.
I agree with you that we will not piut oil “out” with seawater fuel but the fuel will put such a dent in fossil fuel that the Russkies and the Saudis will be hit hard through reduced demand and lower fuel prices.
Now, I have only read one article about this so far and it said 3-6 bucks per gallon . But, there is a big BUT! That is “the Navy’s” estimated costs. Meaning, they have to have Naval Ship based CONVERSION plants which is a hugely more expensive proposition as toting the fuel all over the world is far different than sticking a straw in the ocean.
So, bottom line, we won’t know for many years WHAT the cost is going to be. Then, the liberals, enviros, politicians and lawyers will have to get their cut. So, we will see. In any event, you can bet that the Saudis and Russkies are looking over their shoulder with dismay at this announcement.
Their days are numbered in any event and they know it.
Were the UN scientists able to keep a straight face when they said it?
UN scientist not scientist. He hocus pocus meister.
I have this great idea on how to tap the power of Unicorns blowing Skittles out their a$$.
Baloney! More likely we must do it because the dingbats have tied up a bunch of money investing in it, and they want to make gazillions of bucks off the “little people”
“UN scientist” is code for blithering idiot, commie junk scientists.
