Federal agency vows to continue legal action after ending Nevada ranch standoff [BLM v Bundy]
FOX News ^ | April 13, 2014 | Edmund DeMarche, Matt Finn and the AP contributed to this report

The Bureau of Land Management vowed Saturday that it would continue its legal fight to remove illegal cattle from a rural Nevada range after ending a tense weeklong standoff with a rancher and his supporters.

"After 20 years and multiple court orders to remove the trespass cattle, [rancher Cliven] Bundy owes the American taxpayers in excess of $1 million. The BLM will continue to work to resolve the matter administratively and judicially," a statement from the bureau said. "We ask that all parties in the area remain peaceful and law-abiding as the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service work to end the operation in an orderly manner."

The BLM also announced that it was wrapping up its month-long operation to seize the 900 cattle roaming on federally owned land approximately 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas and would release the 400 head of Bundy's cattle it had already seized "in order to avoid violence and help restore order."

"Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public," the statement read.," the statement read.

Bureau officials had dismantled designated protest areas supporting Bundy, who they say refuses to comply with the "same laws that 16,000 public land ranchers do every year."

A group of about 1,000 supporting Bundy cheered and sang "The Star Spangled Banner" when BLM made its announcement.

There are a few new legalities that have come up during this chaos. Another rancher’s cattle were found during the gather...grazing in the same area without a lease. I haven’t seen anything about that rancher being in trouble with the government. Selective enforcement? There is also issue with Nevada being an open range state meaning if the government did not have the cows fenced out by state law it was might be legal for them to be there. The first confrontation when the son was arrested...was he just trying to video what was happening? The amount of force and different things the feds did- violation of rights issues? I have seen where people say the land in question was set aside by congress for grazing. If it is now being converted to other use is that legal? The government has been taking away grazing areas all over the West for many years so this could be a big issue. The list goes on and on with legal issues other than the ones that brought Bundy to this point. This will likely be in court forever on one issue or another. Field day for lawyers looks to me like.

I don't know that the BLM raised the fees, but what they did do was limit the number of cows grazed on that allotment to 150. That is not enough cattle to sustain a cattle ranching operation. That's barely a hobby farm.

It is my understanding that Bundy's land consists of 160 acres. If that is true, then that is the same amount of land that was allowed when land was granted in the 1800s. As other FReepers here have pointed out, in the Nevada desert environment, 160 acres is not even enough land to sustain one cow for an entire year, much less a herd. Talk about doing damage to the environment! Putting that many cattle in such a small space would destroy it. That is why these grazing lands were established in the first place. Everyone keeps saying, "He should have kept the herd on his own property!" In that case, there would not be a single rancher left in the entire state of Nevada because they've not been able to buy up that much land - the state owns it! Over the years, the Fed has moved in, claimed ownership and gradually made all these ranchers trespassers.

I expect the administration to go balls-to-the-wall with the media and all online news site, commenters, even here on FR to paint Bundy as a psycho, "tea bagging" nut job. (This is already in progress.) Once they drive this meme hard enough to turn the LoFo Voters against Bundy, then they will move in to try and finish him. It's up to all of us to get the word out. Hit your social media. Hit all the news sites. Get your message straight and be clear. Don't engage in tit-for-tat with the idiots out there whose purpose is to drive us off message.

This all boils down to people who do not want a government of the Founders but a government of the opposite. Recall that it was Obama who said that ‘change’ was needed for his intentions. It seems the Mexicans of years past might just have pulled the wool over the eyes of USA government years ago.

Good points. The federal government has always owned the land. What has changed is how it has been manage and that process has become very anti-rancher.

I suppose anyone with any sense is out squatting on federal land right now. Nothing like getting free stuff.

And what exactly is Harry Reid doing here? He is using the power of his office to declare previously public lands as off-limits. He then transitions those lands into federal domain and arranges deals with cronies to sell them off and receive a portion of the land sales. Talking about getting land for free and then profiting off it!

Another thing I would like to point out is how all the city dwellers/soccer moms/yuppies and hippies (who aren't vegans) are all into the latest health craze: GRASS FED. Whether it's beef, chicken, pork, whatever. It must be Grass Fed/Organic. Well, grass fed beef requires land and grass. If you keep them corralled in small areas and feed them grain, that requires antibiotics in such small, crowded conditions.

So they can't have it both ways. Either have healthy cattle with plenty of room to roam, or have penned in cattle fed on GMO grain and antibiotics. And farting methane.

Yep. You see it alright. They don’t want anybody to hand anything down to their families. Inheritance is seen by liberals as the worst thing in the world, even worse than income inequality. They favor a 100% tax on inheritance.

What you are suggesting is only a half-way measure to leftists. They don’t want people eating any kind of meat at all.

Yep. Start ‘em on Texas scrub, finish ‘em in the Spring on Kansas Flint Hills high protein grass, then eat ‘em. Yum, yum. At least that’s how we do it out here.

In yet another ploy to keep the American people weak, anemic, starving and easily controlled.

Steak is good.

It seems to me that if Mr Bundy was paying the county in error, the gov should approach the county for the revenue.

Or, perhaps they have other reasons for the action.

I think we all know what the answer to that is.

If the BLM wants everyone to remain peaceful and law abiding then they should stop tasering people and knocking pregnant women to the ground.
