Bush Urges Effort to Close Black and White Students’ Achievement Gap

AUSTIN, Tex. — Former President George W. Bush called the achievement gap between white and black children “a national scandal” on Thursday and urged both parties to come together to address it as the central civil rights issue of the modern era.

Paying tribute to President Lyndon B. Johnson at a conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, Mr. Bush said the real test of the nation’s commitment to equality would be to fix an educational system that has tolerated low standards for too long.

“There’s a growing temptation among public officials in both political parties at the federal, state and local levels to lower expectations,” he told an audience. “Without meaningful accountability, it is poor and minority children who suffer most. The goal of ending achievement gaps should unite Republicans and Democrats, it should unite teachers and parents.” He added, “It is only right to blow the whistle on mediocrity.”

Mr. Bush’s speech concluded the three-day conference hosted by the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, where three other presidents also commemorated the landmark antidiscrimination law of the Johnson era. Mr. Bush reached across the aisle to hail Johnson’s domestic achievements, including his commitment to education, and noted that he signed a law naming the Department of Education for him.

“Lyndon Johnson was continuing the work of Abraham Lincoln, which is really the work of the Declaration of Independence — ‘All men are created equal,’ ” Mr. Bush said. “He made us one people. I’ve got great respect for the way President Johnson used the presidency to achieve big goals. He understood the risks to his party and the risks to his coalition.”

Let’s be fair. George W. was probably the best democrat president of the last 100 years.

He still doesn’t get it.

They all don't get it. They accept the Left's premise and narrative so the NY Slimes won't say mean things about them.

Get the Feds completely out of education. Public education is an anachronism that's suited to the 1800s, not the 21st century where kids can easily learn at home online.

Government have been failing since the civil rights act.

I would say at least since FDR's New Deal.

Political correctness forbids us from having the guts to have honest discussions about race.

In the area of education, we aren’t allowed to talk about how doing well is derided as “acting white” by many black students. We’re not allowed to talk about many of their parents do not value educational achievement. We’re not allowed to talk about how critical numbers of black children are being raised in less than ideal circumstances. We’re not allowed to talk about how many inner city schools are in disrepair because blacks themselves commit vandalism and theft against the properties.

We’re not allowed to talk about the fact that many big city school systems already spend more per capita than the national average, so that simply demanding more money or resources isn’t the answer. We’re not allowed to talk about how the lack of discipline, both at home and in school, inhibits the educational process with these students.

I would appreciate a good solid discussion of how to deal with the problems in inner city schools, and lack of achievement of black students as a group, but as noted, there are a number of areas which are simply taboo to discuss as part of any discussion.

Kids who have no parental control over them, who use meth, crack and other drugs often want nothing more than the thug/gang lifestyle. They quit school, commit crimes and procreate often, abandoning the children they've created or aborting them as a form of birth control. They end up in prison or being killed or wounded when they commit crimes or when their own kind destroys them.

Equalizing achievement between races (school children) can only work if the kids involved want to be educated and want to become productive members of society and/or have loving parents who guide them toward success. Why gang members aren't treated as domestic terrorists is a serious question. A few examples of that happening might just change the mindset of some kids who see thuggery as a viable lifestyle for the rest of their days. If not, then they need to be institutionalized because what they espouse doing to others is criminal and costing human lives and countless taxpayer dollars.

All men may be created equal. However, all cultures are not. Change their culture and you will change their achievement.

The leftists finally got one right.

He is a retard.

Inner city kids and kids of all races in general that attend PUBLIC SKOOLS run by the COMMUNIST TEACHER UNIONS are the problem.

The only way to close the achievement gap between two races separated by one standard deviation in IQ is not to teach anyone anything.

My thoughts exactly. Then again, the politicians want to have a ignorant population because that allows them to rule.

He’s still clueless.

W, How about asking why there are so many father-less homes in the black community? Why do so many not care for their very own children?

How about asking why parents don’t have a CHOICE when it comes to education? Both black and white parents prefer sending their children to a school of their choice.

How about asking why the federal government took over education?
