With a single phrase of compassion for immigrants in the U.S. illegally, Jeb Bush has prompted questions about his viability as a potential presidential contender and underscored how divisive the immigration issue remains for the Republican Party.
The former Florida governor sparked a conservative furor this week when he described illegal immigration in an interview as an act of love by people trying to provide for their families.
Backing Bush are some of the GOPs most powerful insiders and financiers, who are hoping the party can woo Hispanic voters and rebound from Mitt Romneys damaging self-deportation rhetoric in 2012.
The worst thing that can happen to a political party is not for voters to decide they dont like you, said Alex Castellanos, a GOP consultant and former Romney adviser. Its for voters to decide you dont like them. And thats where the Republican Party is right now.
Other GOP lawmakers and conservative activists, however, are cringing over Bushs remarks, which triggered vocal opposition and concerns about amnesty.

Deport criminals who come here illegally.
I have an ACT OF LOVE....STAY OUT OF THE BUSHES =)
I agree. We must quickly give them the boot.
Hey Jeb
You killed Terri Schiavo instead of allowing her life in the shadows
She had a Constitutuional right to live which YOU DENIED HER.
Jeb, no one has a right to break the law just because they belong to the country next door
Or don’t you get that Jeb?
I agree, Governor.
So go back to Mexico, go to the US Embassy, walk up to the front door and fill out an application to come LEGALLY like everyone else.
Will surely keep you “out of the shadows”.
Sneaking around and cheating the people who have obeyed the law is not an American value either.
He might be on to something, and it's the conservative base, probably half the Republican vote, who are now deciding the above.
The strategy of the GOPe is to insult and take the base for granted while pandering shamelessly to the Latino voters.
I sincerely hope not.
But it is an American value to selectively enforce laws to suit the needs of the big-government/big-corporate crony-fascist complex, right Jethro?
Does any other country on the PLANET ever speak with such insanity of allowing anyone to cross their border out of love??
This is beyond insane.
Uh, Jeb ... they chose the shadows by coming here illegally. Those that choose to follow the laws do not have to hide in the shadows.
He is talking about foreign criminals. Why do politicians never show such kindness and compassion for Americans??
The problem with his argument is that we will ALWAYS have illegals in America If you naturalize every illegal here today, tomorrow even more will come here illegally.
Funny how Jeb never wants to talk about unemployment and Americans who can’t find jobs. It’s all about Mexico for him.
The problem is he has sold out to dead end leftist rhetoric just like the half of the country afraid to be called mean and racist.
Until we get some courage to spit in the faces of the real racists, as they richly deserve, we are sunk.
FUJB
It’s an American value to apply the law to lawbreakers.
Tough love.
It is also an American value to not kill a defenseless, paralyzed woman, Jeb.
Ya putz.
Dear Jeb. It’s an American value to simply be yourself, mind your own business, do your own work, raise your own family, and live your own life.
That’s called a normal life lived out of the spotlight. In the shadows, if you will.
So, not only are you wrong, but you’ve used the wrong words.
Illegals are “in the shadows.” They’re “on the lam”. That’s what happens to those doing illegal things: illegal entry, illegal driver’s license, illegal social security number, illegal access to social services, illegal enrollment in schools, illegal receipt of tax returns, and the list goes on and on.
Jeb, you don’t understand. That silver spoon’s been in your mouth so long that you wouldn’t know a middle class American family...if you STEPPED ON one.
