THERE are unconfirmed reports that the black box flight recorder from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has been found.
Perth radio station 6PR tweeted the report, citing aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who is in China, is giving a pre-planned press conference at 2pm AEST.

While I don’t know if this is true for all model of planes, black boxes are designed, in the event of a water crash, to disengage from the plane and float to the surface.
Correct.
We’ll have to wait to see if the rest of the plane is attached
Angus Houston just threw cold water on PM Abbott’s statements. Said no major new developments.

bleeech
“if they find the boxes without the actual plane I will think some shenanigans are going on here”
So what “independent authority” is going to go out to the “crash site” and “verify” that the plane’s there? Just look at the prospect of Flight 800 not being a “fuel tank” explosion despite all the FBI ascertions that it was. I mean the “trust” of all the world’s governments is at an all-time low.
Sorta begs the question, if it really is the black box, what the heck was the airplane doing waaaaay over there by Australia?
I would think that only Boeing, or the manufacturer of the recorder, can safely access it. I doubt that it has a USB jack that you can connect with a cable to any desktop PC and it immediately starts playback. As a bare minimum, the outer protective container must be opened - and they are made to survive in fire, or as this case may be, at the bottom of the ocean. You don't want to do this with a sledgehammer or a plasma cutter. You need drawings, documents, and special tools. Boeing has them. I doubt that the customer airline has them as well. It's not something they need to maintain from the inside - it's just a board with Flash chips. If it passes self-test, it's good to go. If it doesn't, back to the manufacturer it goes.
Lloyd Bridges from “Sea Hunt” is leading the scuba team.
He picked a bad time to quit meth-cocaine.
Heheh.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
Listening to live feed - very low quality/distorted of PM speaking now.
“We are confident that we know the position of the black box flight recorder to within a distance of a few kilometres.”
Unless the boxes have changed in the last few years they are actually wire recordings. Sounds silly in todays electronics world but the non-corrosive wire can withstand a lot of heat chips cannot and still contain data.
Actually it is the FAA or NTSB that can open up and transcribe the info.
Name one model aircraft that has this magical mechanism.
Be honest, can you say that without hearing the dramatic music in your head? Unless of course your a youngster.
Malasia gets first dibs.
But they may defer to NTSB, who is acknowledged to be the best at forensic retrieval.
Certainly NOT Boeing, and NOT Malaysia Airlines.
