Jeb Bush's "act of love" comments about immigration over the weekend drew massive headlines with some conservatives criticizing him for his latest apostasy on the issue.
But, it's the lead-up to Bush using the phrase "act of love" that's actually the really important part of what he said. Here it is with our bolding added:
"There are means by which we can control our border better than we have. And there should be penalties for breaking the law. But the way I look at this -- and I'm going to say this, and it'll be on tape and so be it. The way I look at this is someone who comes to our country because they couldn’t come legally, they come to our country because their families -- the dad who loved their children -- was worried that their children didn’t have food on the table. And they wanted to make sure their family was intact, and they crossed the border because they had no other means to work to be able to provide for their family. Yes, they broke the law, but it’s not a felony. It’s an act of love. It’s an act of commitment to your family. I honestly think that that is a different kind of crime that there should be a price paid, but it shouldn’t rile people up that people are actually coming to this country to provide for their families."
Jeb Bush knew exactly what he was doing. He knew that calling for a different standards for immigration depending on why the person entered the country would make conservatives' blood boil....

I agree with all your points. The move is calculated. Erroneously IMO, but thought out and deliberate nonetheless.
The powers that be put McCain and Romney forward as token candidates to lose to Obama. During the election campaign it was clear neither was pursuing victory aggressively. When McCain was ahead he “suspended” his campaign and made a fool of himself going to Washington during the financial crisis. No one trying to win an election would have behaved in this way. In addition, at every opportunity McCain told the electorate that his opponent would be a good president. He refused to attack his opponent on Obama’s obvious flaws and left wing associations.
Likewise Romney made no effort to enlist the conservative base of the party for their votes or to make use of their numbers to get out the vote on election day. Despite positioning himself as an astute business leader, he pinned his election day get out the vote on an unproven and untested computer system which failed miserably the first time it was tried. No CEO worth his salt would ever bet the company on an untried computer system. Like McCain he refused to go on the attack. When Obama and Candy Crowley ganged up on him during a debate when he was trying to make an important point, he folded like a wilted flower instead of calling them out. Like McCain, Romney played to lose.
It appears Jeb is preparing to serve his masters by playing the fall guy for Hillary. Any political poll taker, and anyone with any common sense, knows the Bush name is radioactive with the electorate. Jeb will be a punching bag if he runs against Hillary, O’Malley, Cuomo, Biden, or Deval Patrick. They will define him as the reincarnation of George W. Bush.
The Bush family political advisor Karl Rove certainly knows from polling there are not enough Hispanic voters who will vote for Jeb over any Democrat to make up for the conservative base sitting at home. The fact Jeb is already kicking the base in the eye tells me he knows he will lose if he runs. The question then is, if you know you will lose, why would you run? Certainly McCain and Romney know the answer to the question.
So what?

The Bushes couldn’t run fast enough into the arms of the Clintons.
In a sane world people would see the obvious things the GOP is doing and hammer them with it. But we live in a world where ‘rock ribbed conservatives’ will cower in fear again, then pull the lever for whatever lib the GOP brings out this time.

If Jeb Bush decides to run for president, he wouldn’t have to face the voters for two years. However, at the moment, he must face potential corporate donors and comply with their wishes or there is no chance he will be able to mount a campaign.
And what do corporate donors want as far as immigration is concerned except open borders so that aliens can flood in and provide cheap labor for their businesses? So we get the ‘’heartbreaking’’ story from Jeb.
The reaction must be embarrassing for Jeb, but how else can he prove his trustworthiness to corporate interests unless he commits an act that demonstrates he’s willing to sacrifice his principles by telling shamefully lying anecdotes about immigration in exchange for their financial support?
We’ll know Jeb has sewn up the big-money interests when he starts spending huge amounts on ads over the next two years ‘’clarifying’’ his position on immigration so that he can win the Republican nomination and, if he becomes president, repay his donors by keeping the borders even more open and welcoming than they are now.

Jeb was also essentially saying he will not enforce immigration laws if he’s POTUS.

Bush is certainly smart enough to adapt his views to the party's if he really wants the nomination.
He may just be trying to nudge Republican debate in the direction he wants.

I wouldn't want to be in Romney's situation in that debate, would you? Attack the moderator and you lose more votes than you win. Even if the moderator's biased against you, the word gets out that you've lost your cool and the media piles on.
And when he loses big in '16, the squishes can come here on FR and post their mindless rants about how it's all our fault he didn't win.
