Windows XP, Microsoft Corp.s beloved seventh major operating system and arguably the companys most successful, was left to perish on Tuesday at its creators hands. It was 12 years, seven months old.
~snip~
Windows XPs funeral, a private ceremony held deep within Microsoft, was quiet. In lieu of flowers, Microsoft urged customers to donate to Windows 8, one of Windows XPs grandchildren.

Unless you are in China. They are still providing support there.
Oh come on. I’m not a Microsoft fanboi, but XP’s time has come and long gone. There should be no mourning. Windows 7 works great.
Won’t good anti-virus software take care of any “security holes” that are left unpatched?

I have no idea what they are talking about. I’m still using it on two machines. Is it going to suddenly stop working? What about my machine running Win2K?
Yeah well I loved my XP but my computer was dying and I had to get Windows 8..
Today my 8 has been giving me fits..
not opening a page or not maxing and other dumb things that were fine yesterday..
FR is OK but not other sites..
cant get Bing or Google to work..
Is this related to the death of XP ???
Yep, we use 7 on the desktop and laptop. Happy as a clam, but back in the day we really did enjoy XP.
Why would anyone want to exploit holes in XP at this point. Not enough machines to bother with. It’s one of the reasons you didn’t hear about Mac viruses for so long. :-P
Kinda sorta; it could intercept viruses but can’t update any applications to improve their virusproofness.
Microsoft might be wise to outsource legacy support to someone else.
I can’t even remember the last time I used XP, people need to catch up and stop whining.
Not enough machines!
How about better than a quarter of the internet.
As soon as those installations begin to ferment, Microsoft will be telling “I told you so” to a tornado.
I have a feeling that there would still be some gaps, but I’m not real techie, so don’t rely on me, lol.
Unfortunately, a large percentage of computers are still running XP. And if the computers are not modern enough, they might not be able to run the crappy Window 8.1.
But MS has a link to some nifty brand new computers.
Here lies Windows XP
It lived a long life as Microsoft tried to kill it off
by substituting even worse operating systems.
It lived the remainder of its life as an unwanted stepchild.
Dad favored Millenial Edition and continued to produce other lame children.
Now, it has been cast out into the cold - food, water and protection withheld.
XP will be remembered as Peak Microsoft.
Like in today’s tight times someone wants to spring for all new hardware plus the extra cost and hassle of migrating their applications?
There’s another answer, however. Linux!
Well, since I use my machines for music and recording, and they are not hooked up to the internet, I suppose the point is moot.
XP will continue to work (heck, I imagine some people still run Windows 98 somewhere) but Microsoft will no longer support it.
Nana, I don’t think your problem ties in with the end of XP. Probably just coincidental.
Private XP not on the internet at all would be safe enough. Use a more modern machine/OS on the internet when possible.
This looks like a great opportunity for Linux. Some of them, like the *buntu’s, make it easy for you to turn your Windows XP into an optionally bootable partition.
It won’t stop running you can still use it..you just won’t get anymore patches or tech support for it..basically your on your own if something goes wrong with the OS
