(CNN) - Senator Ted. Cruz, R-Texas, often rubs establishment Republicans the wrong way.
The feeling is mutual.
Speaking on what he views is the path to victory for Republicans, Cruz said, "I don't think Washington elites are going to be very effective picking the nominee."
"I think it's going to be, quite rightly, a decision for the grassroots to make," Cruz said in an interview with CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper."
That would certainly benefit the Texas Republican, who came to the U.S. Senate on a wave of tea party support.
Cruz is considered a potential 2016 presidential candidate, but he would likely not be establishment Republicans' first pick.
With New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie embroiled in a controversy over lane closures that led to a massive traffic jam, there has been renewed interest in former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
On Sunday, Bush said the debate over immigration reform needs to move past derisive rhetoric describing illegal immigrants.
"Yes, they broke the law, but it's not a felony. It's an act of love, it's an act of commitment to your family," Bush told Fox News host Shannon Bream at town hall event at the George Bush Presidential Library Center.
"We need to be a nation that welcomes and celebrates legal immigrants, people who follow the rules, and come here according to the law," said Cruz in response.
"Rule of law matters. And if you look at any sovereign nation, securing your border is critically important," said the freshman lawmaker.
"We need to solve the problem to secure the borders and then improve and streamline legal immigration so people can come to America consistent with the rule of law," said Cruz.

Fix Mexico.
Yeah, Jeb. Fix Meheeco. Don’t destroy America.
So far they been great at it.
I would love to see Cruz/Paul vs Clinton/Bush.now that would be one hell of a battle to the death.
Right!
Jebbie “The Jokester” Bush said on a FOX-aired interview tonight that breaking US Border Laws should be approved, as long as the illegal violations were done for “Love of Family.”
The Beattles have been proven right again: “All you need is Love!”
Karl Rove, and all the other doormat Republicans must be so proud!
I can see Jebbie’s 2016 Campaign yard signs now - - - - .
Lemme see now - - - - , Mrs. Bill Clinton might get some advice from the guy she is married to, as he tried for YEARS to be the Nation’s Lover Boy Expert - - - .
2016 just might be a “Sweet Sixteen” style Campaign!
We will see if he is right or not. The GOP wants Jeb Bush or Chris Christie but even they are not ignorant enough to think these two can win. Most likely they will settle for Rand Paul and push hard for Cruz, Huckabee, and maybe Santorum to neutralize each other by splitting social conservative vote, just like 2012.
Rand Paul can win and he is not Mitt Romney who was basically just a liberal. Rand Paul is more of libertarian than a conservative, if elected he will not govern as a true conservative, particularly on social issues. I am not sure he is less electable than Ted Cruz. Cruz does not pander, and is willing to say hard truths and take unpopular principled positions. Is there still any room in our nation for such politicians?
So, if I use Jeb’s info to buy a nice anniversary gift for my wife, he’d be cool with that?
Absolutely Rand Paul is another Romney.
A big portion of the conservative base will only vote for a social conservative. We saw this last time.
Jeb Bush is making a very clear bid to sew up the voter loyalty of the 11 to 30 Million Illegal Alien Invaders from Mexico who have been bleeding the USA dry since the disastrous Reagan Amnesty of 1986.
Mrs. Bill Clinton will soon have to start making political speeches in Spanish.
As “both” political parties plunge in the race for the US financial bottom, my guess is that they will reach it - - - alone.
Wars have begun over a lot less of an invasion of territory.
It is time, for a change.
OMG, I heard that interview today on CNN via XM Radio!!! Cruz is simply masterful at articulating conservative positions, as well as adroitly refuting liberal premises, such as Anderson Cooper threw at him. It’s not just WHAT he says, but HOW he says it. Just amazing.
Yeah, sure there has.
He let Terri Schiavo starve to death.
If he was right in the head and honorable he would make it clear he is not running.
Instead he walks around saying silly things about illegal aliens.
It's like a twilight zone episode
It seems I’m all Bushed out. Please, please, no more “compassionate conservatives”.
Agreed. Jeb Bush is from an elitist Republican family but the problem is that Jeb is simply no longer Republican. Jeb may have been a Republican at one time in the past, but the fact is that Jeb has now become a liberal wanting to go even further left.
Jeb is playing a charade, pretending to be Republican, because being Republican is his only gateway to power. He is circumscribed by hos family hostory yet has devolved far away from his Republican roots.
What Jeb has said is that it is an act of love to NOT enforce current immigration laws. Next will it be an act of love for a man to murder his cheating wife?
Jeb Bush is a piece of work, hardly presidential material. He should be content with his smuggler wife and stay home eating Chimmichangas, and just go away for good.We would not need his potential first lady influencing any national policies of the United States on immigration or any other national interest. Why watch Leave it to Beaver? Thats just an old boring TV show.
If we wanted her, we would be nominating Mrs. Jeb Bush.
So far they been great at it.
Yes they have, and they will certainly give it the old college try again.
Oh come on, look at the great picks they have had for us in the past. They gave us Doyle, Mcain and Romney! Ok, all 3 lost but they were great candidates, weren’t they?
