More mission creep, more highhanded government causing problems for citizens
(Fox News)"A federal proposal requiring more efficiency from wood-burning stoves has ignited a debate between the Obama administration and lawmakers who oppose the new regulations, arguing the rules impose an unfair burden on people in remote areas. The Environmental Protection Agency proposed a rule changes in January that would dramatically tighten emissions requirements on new wood-powered heaters, though does not impact ones already in homes. The EPA estimates that as much as 13 percent of all soot pollution in the U.S. is a result of inefficient wood-fired stoves and boilers."
Is soot a problem from a purely environmental viewpoint? Yes. Just like it has been since Man discovered fire.
Of course, these wankers are looking at it from a climate change point of view, rather than simply a clean air and water view.
I wonder if they plan on implementing regulations against Mother Nature for when she starts fires from lightening strikes?

I do...saves about 25-30% of electric useage on 20 degree mornings. Finally learned to place several cast iron kettles on the stove top. Each gallon of water evaporated as steam gives an additional 8000 BTU. And if youre in the middle of nowhere how would the epa know anyway?
They do emit smoke, you know.
I need to know which wood stoves are going to be banned so I can get one beforehand.
I do, for one. Not my only heat, but the main heat I use.
Lots of people in rural counties around here burn wood because natural gas is not available, and electric, fuel oil and propane are enormously expensive in an older home.
And there will be lots more now that we just had a propane shortage and price hike this winter.
Even if one has to buy their wood, which most don't, a $150 cord of wood/mo compared to a $700/mo gas bill....no brainer
Right you are. The phrase "as much as" is the real red flag here. What the EPA is really saying is this: wood-fired devices contribute to between 0 and 13% of all soot pollution.
And that's a laughably meaningless statement.
This is a tax issue. There is no way to tax you on dead trees.
the local governments pay to cut and open burn tens of thousands of trees a year in IN.
Fortunately, agriculture trumps tree hugging here in corn country
While you’re at it abolish this too: http://sparetheair.org
These people have 40 some odd “smoke agents” prowling the neighborhoods in the Bay Area from November 1st to February 28th looking for “violators” burning wood in wood stoves when they decide that the air is too polluted. The rest of the year they just campaign to eliminate wood burning. All our wood stoves are “grandfathered” and you can’t legally install a wood burning stove or an open fireplace in new construction. My bet is that in succeeding years, they will get the authority to ban all wood burning, which will come right after we are ordered to “register” our wood burning appliances. Why it’s just like the assault on the 2A. What’s next a tax on the length of your (oh never mind, you get the idea).
Who and why (assuming not diseased)?
Registering my 85 yr old fireplace and chimney will be “fun”.
War on the kulaks, 2014 style.
It's probably time to set up a religion with mandatory ceremonial burnings of stuff and rules that proscribe 0bamaCare..
Anyone out there heard of anyone else out there compiling a list of EPA employees and their home addresses for any reason?
County Drainage Boards keeping ditches cleared so that $13,000/acre cropland isn't standing under water instead of producing 200 bushels of corn. Not to mention the towns themselves that are built on floodplains
Everyone in our county pays into one of hundreds of Regulated Drains and the Surveyor is charged with their maintenance..
That statement was true at so many points in history. I’m afraid this will be just another foot-note
Ah, that makes sense.
But what about Frog/Toad/Snake habitat - for the children (now shorn of past kid freedom to take to the outside to hours/day with knives/firecrackers/matches/BBgunz)?
Haven't seen that price in PA for at least seven years...$170-180.
The February ice storm was sweet...twelve good sized trees brought down. One big cherry went right from the saw to the stove. House never dropped below 64 degrees despite 80+ hours without electricity.
In the meantime, it’s OK to let forest fires burn Yellowstone park with no effort to put out the fires back in the 90’s because it was a natural thing.
Now days it’s ok to let dead fall in national forests just lay there as more fuel for a nasty fire.
Someone wants to have a small wood fire to keep warm, and they are destroying the world.
The lunacy will never stop until this country has completely fallen.
On the other side of the coin we did buy one of the those EPA wood burners in 08 that reburns the smoke. It appears we get more heat from the wood, but what is a fact is with each chimney inspection it shows no need to clean the chimney. And we do 12 cords a year.
