The U.S. and Europe have been emphatic in their support of the new Ukrainian government but a significant number of Washington's new bedfellows are members of what some experts class as extreme right-wing parties.
When Sen. John McCain traveled to Kiev in December, he told the crowd of 200,000 on Independence Square: "The free world is with you, America is with you, I am with you."
But among those stood next to the veteran Republican was Oleh Tyahnybok, leader of the Svoboda Party. Some policy analysts have called Svoboda ultra-nationalist and even neo-Nazi.
Svoboda, which means "Freedom," was given almost a quarter of the Cabinet positions in the interim government formed after the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych in February.
The party's policies center around protecting the rights of what it calls ethnic Ukrainians, the preservation of the Ukrainian language and culture, and strict controls on immigration.
Although much of the more extreme content has now been removed from Svobodas leaflets, the European Parliament passed a resolution on Ukraine in 2012 that asked Kiev not to associate with the party on account of its racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic views.
One of the party's lawmakers was appointed to run the powerful defense ministry before being forced out. However, Svoboda still holds one of the vice prime minister posts as well as the ministries of agriculture and the environment.
Breaking....
Acting President Of Ukraine ,Turchinov, cancels trip to Lithuania to deal with Pro-Russian protests in Donetsk and Luhansk....who seized administration buildings earlier today.
Maidan and Right Sector groups headed to these cities to stop the Pro-Russian plans.
There will be no doubt conflict tonight....How Putin and EU/US respond as things get heated in Eastern Ukraine will be telling. Looks like same “plan” that was initiated in Crimea....and the people are co-operating thus far.
Update....situation in Eastern Ukraine
.... continues to move rapidly ...Ukraine govt forces now are planning to storm pro-Kremlin-controlled building in Donetsk using massive force. Those holding the building are aware of this.
Police in Donetsk Ukraine have gone against gov orders & let in Russian state-controlled TV.
If there is no quorum by midnight, protesters say will dissolve regional council and create a people's council instead. .....Their aim is ‘to call referendum’ on securing more ‘autonomy from Kiev’. ......they do not support Kiev Gov. Officials.
Looks like the USA/EU have stirred up a hornets nest as Eastern Ukraine Pro-Russians rise now to the occasion.
-President of Ukraine Turchynov called urgent meeting of power ministries and departments because of the situation in Donetsk Lugansk...expect to send Troops to regions possible
(Police protecting pro-russian operation leaders earlier today)

EuroMaiden sending out SOS.....
....likely rallying to go to Donestk where appears the tipping point for Eastern Ukraine is taking place tonight....
Live feed....

Pro-Russian coordinator from Kiev is warning his colleagues that ‘Kiev is sending special forces’ to Donetsk Ukraine.
Clash almost likely as the groups converge, for Eromaiden has called SOS to their people, Pro-Russians to their people to rally in Donestk...and Ukraine Gov. sending special forces to Donestk.
Big test for the new Ukraine Gov. if they can contain this and ebb the tide building....EU..USA...and Russia no doubt watching events unfold.
2 thousand people shouting “we want Russia, we want Stalin”, yes I know.
Not sure where you get your news but a lot of what you wrote is nonsense. My family participated at the Maidan, my uncle and his family live in Kyiv and were among the many average Ukrainians who were simply fed up. They protested peacefully until Yanukovych started in with his brutal repressive tactics, assaulting journalists then unleashing secret police on the crowds, people were left with no choice but to fight back.
As far as the rest it seems like you are buying into a lot of the Russian propaganda which has been disseminated quite efficiently here,as well.
The “outsiders” in this situation are on the Russian side, the true fascists and Nazi’s in Europe all fully support Russia in this matter.
In the end, the Ukrainian people deserve the chance to settle these things for themselves, democracy is not always neat, but people are doing their best and Putin is trying to consolidate his power ahead of any elections which might legitimize the new government.
Caww has a long history on FR, of being an unbiased news searcher.
You, otoh, signed up 2 days ago. How do we know you have all the relatives in Ukraine etc etc?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
LOL ! He is a Russian, who has a long history of being a disinformation agent.
Caww is not a Russian. Are you out of your mind?
Were there not supposed to be elections in a few months’ time?
Good question, Little Jeremiah, and great point!
And good point about RFR signing up two days ago.
Caww, awesome posts! Man I wish I could find the stuff that you do...
Very pessimistic world view there, caww. But Ukraine has been in worst situations, the past three centuries were a complete write off. Relatively speaking, today’s crisis is, an improvement.
During Maidan, the joke was, if the situation was dire and you didn’t know what to do, sing the national anthem.

As for the geopolitical side of this thing, it’s not going to be the big players doing the actual fighting with Russians, it’ll be Ukrainians, so I can’t agree that Ukraine is a bystander. Used by US, meh, up to a point I guess, but I’d prefer to say that it’s providing assistance because there has been so much tension between Ukraine and Putin’s Russia that it was meant to happen, regardless of US showing up.
They will fight the Russians right down to the last Pole.
