(CNN) -- A suspected shooter at Fort Hood, Texas, is dead, but the situation is still considered an active scene, multiple U.S. officials told CNN on Wednesday.
"There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and injuries are reported. Emergency crews are on the scene. No further details are known at this time," the Army post said in an evening statement.
Fort Hood's official Twitter feed asked that all personnel on post shelter in place. Sirens were going off.
President Barack Obama has been briefed on the incident and will continue to receive updates, according to a White House press pool report. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel also was monitoring the situation.
Deke Jones, with Scott & White Memorial Hospital, told CNN his facility was receiving patients.
"I don't have a number," he said.
Sheriff's deputies from Bell County and state troopers are assisting by securing the area around the post, according to Bell County Sheriff's Lt. Donnie Adams.
Authorities in the town of Killeen, just outside the gates, are also standing by to help, said Mayor Dan Corbin.
"It is unclear what is going on right now," Corbin said. "We have been in touch with appropriate personnel, we are standing by with our police and ambulances, if needed. We are very concerned. Fort Hood is always there for us and we want to be there for them."
He continued: "They are used to dealing with combat situations, and I'm sure they are very capable of handling this."

There was a Einstein headline from the MSM short of like this either a few days ago, or a few weeks ago that even a snail could have figured it out better than the brainless stupid media.
Do they allow illegal aliens to be soldiers?
agree .damage done will repeat itself for all eternity imho ..only solution is to teach our children to NOT fall for the polidiots and presstitutes bullshit divide an conquer agenda.
till then carry a firearm and protect yourselves people. if a local law won’t allow such then fight it or move . gun free areas are death traps.
lot more threats to america to be handled that are clouded behind a veil of hate.
my opinion.
stay safe
It can but not in the way anyone is thinking. What I'm about to post is not Tin Foil Kookery it is medical fact. Given the wrong medications for PTSD and Anxiety can trigger a very serious adverse medication called Serotonin Syndrome. So? Some may say? So it can have the same effect on the brain as taking LSD. The patient can have hallucinations.
Here is the problem. Doctors due to media and FDA pressures rather than writing a faster acting benzodiazepine class medication {which BTW can not trigger Serotonin Syndrome but is the antidote} will instead without a second thought write scripts for antidepressants which can trigger this. Antidepressants carry this risk especially in cases of complications of other known or unknown neurological impairments. Most doctors including mental health experts grossly ignore the risk.
I am not defending what this guy did in the least. I am simply exposing a very real issue which I do know a considerable amount about.
PTSD should be an enlistment obligation ender. You do not get over it in days, weeks, or even months. It takes about 3-5 years of therapy. We can not as a nation keep deploying troops multiple times into war zones especially on first enlistment and not expect these issues. Many troops today are seeing more war zone time Per Enlistment than most in WW2.

how long will it be before they say vets can’t own guns?
On Foxnews they are saying he was stopped by an officer who was armed. They didn’t say the officer was a cop or security. She just happened to step out of her office and saw him.
The judge and others are saying the problem is that everyone is disarmed on US military bases.
If the doctors are treating it correctly there's no need to take away their guns. I know of no one with PTSD who wants to kill anyone "IF GIVEN THE PROPER TREATMENT". I have seen improper medication treatment of PTSD cause persons to go psychotic. The military is not known for proper mental health care.
PTSD should be a career ender with the Vet given treatment back home under the care of a psychologist or LCSW and actually their family doctor can handle the medications side of it. The person should be given full disability pay until they have completed treatment. We are talking about years not months.
I've had PTSD. It took about 5 years to be free of it. Mine wasn't due to my service. My wife had PTSD and clinical depression. The medication that was given her made her psychotic and hallucinate. She was given antidepressants.
Special care should be given with antidepressants used to treat PTSD actually IMO unless a very extensive neurological history indicates no neurological impairments they should not be used for treating PTSD.
99.99% of persons who take antidepressants will likely not suffer any type of adverse reaction. Those who do it can be anything mild from headaches, stomach ache, etc to psychotic behavior and hallucinations. This all too often is not caught by doctors and instead they label the adverse reaction as severe mental illness. Check my posting history this past week where a Freeper was talking about seizures. There's a lot of info in that thread about antidepressants & adverse reactions. The military, the VA, and doctors need to do a serious review on the medications side of the treatment for PTSD.
The real cure for PTSD is therapy and time. Keeping a service member in the military with PTSD is not working toward a cure nor effective treatment.
BTW anyone besides myself remember early on in Gulf War Two there were rumors that the military was passing out antidepressants to combat troops? Very, very, dangerous policy.
Puerto Rico Ping! Please Freepmail me if you want on or off the list.
From #113:
“...However this sort of thing does happen with PTSD”
“My post #113 is FACT!! Sorry you do not want to hear it but it is FACT!!!”
No it’s not a fact.
You cant and won’t prove it, so quit with the slander
Yep. The initial reports merged the two people into one.
I was paying attention but an inaccurate report merged Mohammed character with this new killing spree, I didn’t. I re-reported an inaccurate report. I saw the presser from Ft. Hood last night. The commander contradicted himself a couple of times.
Yes, and they were merged into one at the free republic facebook page. That’s where the merge occurred.
He never saw combat:
Well, that “merge” was a mistake then, because that guy was already arrested ... :-) ... he’s in jail.
This current shooter is dead, you see ... having shot himself.
Ya can’t always jump to conclusions (and be “correct”) without gathering one’s facts first and verifying information. And sometimes that takes a bit of time.
"A man who said he was a witness told News 10 that about 20 shots were fired in a post motor pool in the area of Motor Pool Road and Tank Destroyer Boulevard."
A CBSNews report claimed:
"The shooting began shortly after 4 p.m. and lasted about 15 or 20 minutes, Milley said. The gunman opened fire first in a building in the 1st Medical Brigade area, Milley said, and then got into a vehicle, firing several shots he drove to a second building in the 49th Transportation Battalion area.
"He got out, entered the second building, and opened fire again, Milley said.
"Milley said military police responded quickly and the rampage came to a violent end when the suspect, who was armed with a .45-caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic piston [sic], was confronted by a military policewoman."
The contradictions in media reporting will no doubt allow the Traitorobama administration time to formulate an "official" tale, which the fifth-column media will feed to the low information voters.
Anxiety and PTSD doesn't always come from combat. The two can exist together and have two entirely different origins. It sounds like he could have had anxiety and they may have been starting medication treatment. He came there they say in February? If a doctor wrote a script for an AD it takes about a month for them to build up in the blood stream give or take a week or so. Protocol drugs for anxiety isn't antianxiety medications like Valium, Xanax, etc. Protocol medications now are antidepressants. Most doctors are scared witless because of the government and media witch hunts to protect Hollywood recreational user from themselves to write a script for Valium or Xanax.
If anxiety stems from a chemical imbalance where Serotonin uptake needs enhanced then antidepressants do wonders. The same with Phobic anxiety. If anxiety is a secondary condition cause by a neurological condition such as sensory processing issues including Inner Ear etc then antidepressants can push the patient over the edge because it causes the Serotonin in the stomach to migrate to the brain thus producing psychotic behavior including hallucination and agitation.
“Anxiety and PTSD doesn’t always come from combat.”
I’m an RN and am not stupid. My comment was for those who have said that he had a combat related injury and that the military ignores those who need help.
Very sad.
