A 54-year-old Northwest Side man who allegedly pulled a gun during a property dispute is the first concealed carry permit holder arrested in Chicago, police officials say.
William P. O’Connell, of the 7200 block of North Oleander Avenue, lost his permit as a result of the arrest, said a spokeswoman for the Illinois State Police.
In January, a new state law kicked in allowing people to carry concealed weapons as long as they have a permit.
O’Connell was involved in a quarrel over rent money with a 52-year-old man on March 23, police said. O’Connell allegedly pointed a handgun at the man and threatened to shoot him.

These idiots are our worst enemies. They play right into the hands of those who wish to disarm us.
Not enough information were there threats made by the other party.
Just because he was arrested doesn’t mean it wasn’t a proper defensive display.
I personally need more info before passing judgment.
1. You only pull a gun if you are going to use it.
2. After you pull the gun you empty the clip, reload.
Drawing a gun is not for warning nor intimidation.

Your concerns about there not being more complete information on the full situation seem valid to me.
It seems to me that whatever happened, one would wonder why the guy had a gun on him when arguing with someone about such a topic as rent money. I would not be physically present when discussing such a volatile topic, I would telephone the man instead.
Your concern that the man may have a case for self-defense is a good point. Nevertheless, I still submit that it is harmful for our side for anyone to lose their carry permit (especially when the press stands by to give it big publicity) and that anyone who allows himself to lose his permit by getting into a situation where he might be arrested is not one of our friends. He is an enemy to our cause.
I traveled for a living for 30+ years. Millions of road miles as an outside salesman. 2 times I had to produce a gun, never had to use it.
Neither was a dispute, but a clear threat. Both times it ended quickly.

What you wrote is ridiculous. The vast majority of successful defensive uses of guns do not involve shots being fired.
One should not pull a gun unless one is PREPARED to fire it, if necessary, but it is often not necessary. Assuming that pulling the gun will end the threat is foolish, but so is assuming it won’t.
From a legal perspective one should never pull a gun unless he/she reasonably believes he may need to fire it in defense of self or others, though.
Apparently he hid the gun afterward. The judge will see that as an acknowledgement of guilt. Tough to overcome the appearance of an attempted cover-up.

Agree...you not only have to think about your situation, but the backstop and the ramifications afterwards, too...Hollywood has polluted many minds with misinformation. My fav is when Mel Gibson gets shot numerous times in the Lethal Weapon films yet amazing, has not even a limp in the next movies...
I still would not allow myself to get into a person-to-person confrontation in which my personal safety was involved. If the person I had to deal with is like that, he has no business being on my property.

So if a guy’s coming at you with a baseball bat, saying he’s going to knock your head off, you either:
1. Draw your gun and kill him.
or
2. Don’t draw your gun and let him tee off on your head.
Wouldn’t a better choice be to draw your gun, tell him to drop the bat and get on the ground until the police get here.
Or would that be too much warning and intimidation for you?
