History has many examples of language and culture being used as a pretense for invasion.
Of late, Putins reasoning for invading Crimea contained some type of ordained responsibility to protect Russian speaking people. This follows the model set by Germany as they invaded Czechoslovakia to protect the Germans in Sudetenland.
Hitler merely followed a litany of historical examples based on the same manufactured excuse.
When it is suggested that English become the official national language of the United States, it is in part presented to solidify the nation and promote assimilation not only of language but also of culture.
The American southwest is heavily Latino and consequently bilingual. It abuts a sovereign nation sharing that second language. Multiculturalists applaud such a condition. Governmental documents and procedures bow to this arrangement by placating those who are English language skill deficient. A kind and gentle approach.
But history has proven that when large segments of one country abuts another in which the language of that second country is perpetuated, as well as the culture, frictions eventually result.
I am not suggesting Mexico will someday reclaim the Southwest of the United States. But, I am suggesting that the Southwest is not entirely in the national fold.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong. But if this were true, why would China of all places have a bilingual education system where English is a required second language?
Science, Finance, and Transportation (air and naval) are done in English.
It’s apples and oranges. In China, “bilingual education” is for a certain segment of the Chinese population to learn English as an aid to commerce. In the U.S., “bilingual education” is a mechanism to impede the assimilation of Spanish-speakers.
It would be prudent for Mexico to teach English.
Ended up with controversy and a lot of hatred from the Hispanic community towards me over that.
To populate IS to govern.
It worked for the Yankees.
Correctemundo!
“But if this were true, why would China of all places have a bilingual education system where English is a required second language?”
Because the author of this piece is using common academic weasel-speak to avoid mentioning the elephant in the room - ethnicity. The term “Language” is often used to refer in a roundabout fashion to a specific package of ethnic, cultural, and religious traits that make up a distinct “nation” or “people”.
Hence, teaching English to ethnically and culturally Chinese students is not a problem, just as teaching French in U.S. high schools is not likely to inflame identity-based politics or encourage secession or civil disobedience. Such is not the case, for example, with Canada.
However individuals who wish to foment civil strife and ethnically based violence in a nation understand that they must block cultural, linguistic, and ethnic assimilation by minorities.
Demographics will alter our borders which are not being maintained anyhow.
It happened spectacularly in South Africa which the media has ignored for many years, and it is obviously the natural order of things. The insouciance of our government leaders concerning that fact is reckless and astonishing, scarcely to be believed. Yet, it is occurring before our eyes.
Buchanan covers much of this in his book Suicide of a Superpower, but the phenomenon is not exclusive to the USA.
After the American Revolution, for 50-years the Mexicans attacked Americans in the Gulf of Mexico, murdered them and stole their cargoes.
Our young government did nothing about it, mainly because the Mexicans had thrown out the highly centralized Spanish Colonial government and replaced it with the highly centralized home-grown version, that Washington, D.C., figured would correct itself over time. That was a mistake.
It was during that period that Mexicans swore, that no matter what happened, they would never give up seizing back THEIR territory that the gringos had stolen.
I never forget, no matter how nice a Mexican person is when introduced, that they are a potential enemy.
Also, mostly the invasions are, like in the Anschluss or Crimea, for fellow ethnics
I read, speak and write Spanish fluently and know the culture inside and out. Americans have no idea how much of an enemy Mexicans are. I tried to, in a more indirect way, tell them that in school and enraged everyone. You can NOT help people who don't want to be helped. Also, found the statement by Will Rogers which is so true: "It's not so much what you don't know that will hurt you. It's what you know that ain't so." In other words, what so many folks believe about religious issues, other people, women, men, children, etc. simply ain't so and they'll pay for it.
Good observation.
