Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter is speaking out against a reported proposal being considered by the Navy to ban the sale of tobacco products on all its bases and ships, calling it a “political decision.”
The Military Times reported Monday that Navy officials are considering removing tobacco from all retail outlets, including exchange-operated sales venues and Morale, Welfare and Recreation program outlets. Navy commissaries do not sell tobacco products.
Hunter, a Marine veteran who served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, said in a letter to Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus he strongly opposes the ban, saying it will limit or restrict service members from purchasing legal products.

I came in '82. I think sea stores were 25 cents by then. You could still pretty much smoke anywhere on the ship except your rack. The big change was about '94 or '95. Smoking allowed only in a designated smoking area on the weather decks. We had a very anti-tobacco CO at the time. He wanted to get rid of all the smokes on the ship, even to the point of giving them away to other commands if he could. The Suppo was panicking thinking of the loss he would have to eat and talked the CO out of it. CO gave us a smoking area on the weather decks and then said the weather decks are secured at sunset, therefore smoking lamp is out at sunset. Sucked in the winter when sunset was 1600. UA smoking went way up. DCA talked the CO into letting us smoke in the tank deck after sunset, told him there was going to be a fire otherwise. We really liked this CO overall, but on the issue of smoking he was a irrational prick.
I am an honorably discharged veteran of both the US Army and the US Navy. I would counsel young people today to avoid the military. I never thought I would feel this way. It’s a sad thing.

Yaawwwnnnn. Cigarette smoking diminishes fitness. It’s common sense that we should want our troops to be as fit as possible.
PS: I like Duncan Hunter a lot. He rocks.
I smoked while I served. Never was an issue.
A lot of my pals never smoked until they were deployed. They all did an absolutely excellent job doing what they did.
Are you in favor of our heroes doing their jobs while suffering the forced prohibition of nicotine, and the increased distractions that it causes?
Possibly making them less effective while performing their constitutional duties just so you can feel better about yourself and your coveted control over their lives?

Used to be we had freedom in America especially to use a LEGAL PRODUCT.
We ask our military to fight for us, go on float for 6 months at a time but as grown men, you are going to tell them they can not smoke a cigarette?
I weep for this country who is losing the freedoms we used to have.
My request/demand is that you allow the men to choose to smoke or not, but carry the tobacco products in the stores.

AT LEAST this site they don’t wipe out your comment and you can just try the code again. Other places you can write paragraphs and they wipe it out, that is why I always copy it before I try the code.

I didn’t say that you did. I just didn’t want to post the title of that thread on here with my iPhone at the time. So I called it the, “Lets make ecigarettes illegal,” thread -which it seemed to be sounding like to the majority who posted on it.
Quit lying about us. There was no thread titled making e-cigs illegal. Nor was there one about banning e-cigs completely.
I'm not aware of anyone who wants to make them completely illegal. In fact, I think it would be a great idea if current smokers switched to e-cigs. Yeah, there's some different chemicals in them, but the odds are high that they are a lot healthier than traditional tobacco smoke.
But non-smokers and smokers that have quit don't want to breathe second hand vapors any more than they should have to breathe second hand smoke.
Before that our heroes were having to breath second hand smoke inside enclosed places like ships and submarines, due to inconsiderate ass-holes who have no regard for their own bodies, much less that of their ship mates.
