A Navy F-18 fighter pilot and former Top Gun instructor is publicly warning admirals that retention is beginning to suffer from the militarys relentless social conditioning programs.
Cmdr. Guy Snodgrass, until recently a Pentagon speech writer for the chief of naval operations, Adm. Jonathan Greenert, said sailors are becoming fed-up with the constant emphasis on social issues an apparent reference to gays in the military, women in combat and ending sexual harassment.
Sailors continue to cite the over-focus on social issues by senior leadership, above and beyond discussions on war fighting a fact that demoralizes junior and mid-grade officers alike, Cmdr. Snodgrass wrote this month on the U.S. Naval Institute website, an independent forum for active and retired sailors and Marines.
It is a remarkably frank assessment from an upwardly mobile fighter pilot who is due to become the executive officer of a F-18 unit in Japan.
He says one troubling sign already has emerged: a drop in applications to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis last year.
The U.S. Navy has a looming officer retention problem, Cmdr. Snodgrass writes, adding there is an erosion of trust in senior leadership.
He says retention racked up its worst year in history for the special warfare community, including Navy SEALs, with a record number of lieutenants declining to stay.

The question is, are the few Patriots that remain going to let the Democrats destroy the United States? I don’t have any magic solutions myself but I intend to fight to the last breath.
I was in during those years and yes it was bad, but I stayed in until 1998 and got to see the Clinton years.
The mid 90's were even worse.
We’ve had it, along with SHARP training out the wazoo. Can’t even tell a joke anymore without putting your career on the line.
Suggest you check out the Duffel Blog if you’re so inclined. Like the Onion, but for killers.
There's 25 years of damage to undo. The worse of it coming during the past five years when our bare bones military was cut more and more. It's not just POTUS. Congress on both sides of the aisle needs a good hard kick in their arse and start doing their Constitutional duty and uphold their Constitutional and moral obligation to the troops.
Many of us served under either the 3/3 or 4/2 enlistment obligation. For a first enlistment that should suffice. The few allowed exceptions should only be where you signed a six years first enlistment for special advanced training such as Nuclear Propulsion School where the Navy had major money and time invested in training. Today's enlistment obligation is eight years last I heard. Kids signing up today are seeing four and five six month to a year long deployment. This pace has been going on for well over a decade. At the same time Congress has been reducing funding and End Troop Strengths.
GW Bush and the GOP two house leadership missed the golden opportunity to undo previous damage when a build up did not occur following 9/11. We went into Iraq 2 and Afghanistan basically on 1996 manpower levels set by congress. The rubber band has been wound tight and is fixing to snap.
Haven’t had SHARP yet. USAF even started a blog on the portal about sexual assault but after five months only one person is making comments. The website sucks and a lot of the women I ask never heard of it.
I think they are wasting money producing videos and pamphlets every couple of months and the assaults have been increasing. I always say that when I hang out with my buddies I don’t have to worry about them screwing me or me them. When you mix men, women and homos together, throw in booze, then anything can and will happen.
They keep pushing this BS that we are all the same, all wingmen, yada yada yada BS and it aint working.
Obama’s destroying our ability to defend ourselves... could he really be doing this on purpose?
All part of the Communist Plan to destroy America from within, they said they would, I guess nobody believed them.
I think that this may be the son of legendary F-14 pilot Dale “Snort” Snodgrass. Snort was the guy who executed that amazing knife-edge pass alongside the USS America ...
If this is Snort’s kid, he’s probably the only mid-grade officer in the Navy who can so publically say something like this and have it not affect his career.
That's the plan. They didn't succeed in disarming us, so now they are removing the threat of a strong, conservative leaning military.
That picture is a classic :>}
Yes, I remember when President Reagan came in, our morale went up tremendously because we knew he wasn’t going to put up with any Sh!t! Bye Bye Jimah, hello American strength once again, it was a great time to serve! Sorry you had to serve under the Clintonistas, but thanks FRiend for your service!
We did get better after that.....
Me too. USN was the “worlds second largest nuclear navy.”
Except we had a real CNO in Thomas Hayward, not a obummer butt kisser
Alas, it didn't happen but many retired early.
I guess we ought to be eternally grateful to President Bush, that he did not reverse that insidious, unthinkable abomination over his eight long years, leaving us and our military to this present darkness, far worse than anything that bus full of LTCs could have ever imagined.
Jeb Bush for President anyone? Hitlery Clinton? They should be running mates.
Meanwhile, the Army celebrates a record number of sexual assault/harassment cases as "progress". The day may yet come when refusing the advances of your gay battle buddy will be a capital violation of the UCMJ akin to treason and desertion.
When Clinton got elected president seven sodomites came out of the closet on a submarine in the squadron my boat was attached to. Sailors were so ashamed they wouldn’t wear ballcaps with their boat’s name on them. They wore their dog dishes or got a hat from another boat.
I used to have to go to the sub tender all the time for parts. With all the women on board you took your career in your hands every time. No jokes; never be alone in a room with one; don’t let you eyes wander.
And that was 20 years ago. I can’t imagine how bad it is now.
Gee..who saw this coming? [/s]
Common sense would dictate that all this PC stuff goes out the window when it gets in the way of fighting wars. Certainly, it would have in the old days (pre 1990). Now I wonder. Part of me thinks our Elites would rather see us get our a$$es kicked and lose a war rather than reject our new PC ideals. They just trump absolutely everything.
I’ll never forget the day the Gipper’s changes reached my level. It became a focused winning army.

Oh, We Aren't Talking about that movie are we?
Looking at his timeframe as CNO he would have been the one who in about mid 1978 started restoring some needed tradition and addressing retention issues. When I got to the ship in Feb 1977 you didn't hear Bosun Whistles piped out on any ship. Morale was the pits. UA was very high usually resulting in desertion and a discharge. The dress blues were dysfunctional, had no traditional ties to Navy enlisted, and were a pain to stow on the ship.
I do remember seeing some positive changes including the Crackerjacks brought back. He must have understood the fact that if you want men to act like sailors then treat them as such. The senior enlisted about that same time were clamping down on discipline. That was also near the time the policy of 31 Days UA and discharged policy was ended and the bad time tacked on to your obligation as it should have been.
A military full of Homosexual narcissists will be way more easy to convinced to kill their own families when it is time to turn their guns on them.
