Hours after hundreds protested the Albuquerque Police Departments use of force Tuesday evening, officers opened fire on a man near Central and Coors. The man died at the hospital, police said Wednesday morning.
He becomes the 23rd man since 2010 shot and killed by Albuquerque Police, which is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for its use of force
Neighbors at the scene of Tuesdays shooting were shocked and outraged. They said officers shot the man while he was unarmed and talking on a cellphone.
A video shot by a neighbor appears to show a man in a white shirt on a porch holding a cellphone to his right ear before dropping his arm to his side in the seconds before shots ring out. The man appears to fall to the ground after the sound of the gunfire.
Officers responded to 911 calls saying the suspect had pointed a gun at a child shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday at a home on the 200 block of 60th NW, [APD Chief] Eden said.
He said the man exited (the house) with a firearm and fired it, before officers returned fire.

There’s a silver lining here if you live in Albuquerque. Say you hate your boss. Call the police, tell them he/she has a gun and was pointing it at children, bada bing, bada boom the boss has been offed by the police and probably the boss’s dog as well.
Neighbor been a problem? same solution. Oh the possibilities................
The cops feared for their lives. Who knows what a man with a cellphone is going to do. It might me one of those automatic cellphones with cop killer bullets.
The other “avenue” of abuse you can call upon the NM Cops to “employ” is the enema/colonoscopy method of drug search. Have someone you don’t like, well, jus’ call the cops and “inform them” that your erstwhile friend has a packet of cocaine stuck in his a$$. But when your “friend” sues, he may well have his own county after the lawsuit is settled. Beautiful state run by Marxists. Santa Fe is Carmel-by-the-Sea without the ocean.
The part I really liked was when they tried to make him pay for the procedures! Now that takes balls.
Haven’t seen any followup stories on the guy. He won a substantial judgement against the cops and the town/county, but he was also suing the hospital and the doctors who performed the illegal procedures. And there was also a second plaintiff who was also suing for the same abuses. I just hope that the doctors loose their medical licenses and the hospital has to take out a loan to make payment.
The Times compiled an informal list of the new rules from interviews with U.S. forces. Among them:
No night or surprise searches.
Villagers have to be warned prior to searches.
ANA or ANP must accompany U.S. units on searches.
U.S. soldiers may not fire at the enemy unless the enemy is preparing to fire first.
U.S. forces cannot engage the enemy if civilians are present.
Only women can search women.
Troops can fire at an insurgent if they catch him placing an IED but not if insurgents are walking away from an area where explosives have been laid.

Did they at least give him the New Mexico-customary forced anal exam before shooting him?
Redwines criminal history includes drug and weapons charges, in addition to several alleged acts of domestic violence
The cops did the right thing. If the guy complied with the officers he would be in jail and not dead. His record is no different than the others who met the same fate. I wish it wasn't the case that these guys end up dead like this but the officers have families to go home to. Life is full of choices and if you choose a life like Redwine's this is the result. It could have been the result of an illegal business transaction just as easy.
I am glad he is off the streets.
He probably tried to shoot them with the cell phone so they had to open fire. :-)
At least a cell phone is cool. In the 90’s they shot a guy who had a cologne bottle shaped like a train engine. They’ve also had a sniper that took out a dude with a spatula, and more recently they capped a guy who pointed a car brake pad at them. Kid you not.
This new police chief better be working hard to get this handled or I see him leaving soon. I can just imagine what will happen now, after the demonstration and then another shooting. The next demonstration may not be so peaceful.
I live in Cabezon. Just ran for City Council (lost) and got to talk with lots of Rio Rancho cops. They don ‘t particularly care for ABQ officers. Rio Rancho has a very low crime rate. Feel very safe here.
Sorry you lost Crusher! We feel safe where we are and would agree that Rio Rancho is much safer than Abq.
You are just down the road from us - we are in Seville (backs onto McMahon near the Paul Allen homes).
So many look like blimps because they don’t have to chase people any more, they just shoot them.
And it's a GIANT MYSTERY why people followed Uncle Adolf and Uncle Joe blindly...
It hasn't been a mystery to me for quite some time...
Must have been a long handled spatula!
