Louisville Metro Police now say there were 17 incidents involving violent attacks by teenagers in downtown Louisville Saturday night.
Chief Steve Conrad says there were five robberies, four assaults and other cases of criminal mischief and vandalism. At least one of the attacks happened on the Big Four Bridge and some of the victims were hospitalized.
Chief Conrad says they are increasing patrols in the downtown area. The attacks come as the city prepares to host the NCAA women's regional basketball tournament.
Mayor Greg Fischer apologized to the victims. Waterfront Development President David Karem says it's a "safe downtown."

The rule I used to follow is that if I saw three or more youths that didn't seem to have purpose in their activity, I'd avoid them. Most often those groups were black or hispanics, but when they are white youths, I'll avoid them too. Another part of that rule is to walk in plain sight....near the center of a sidewalk rather than shadowed or obscured. Also, avoid city sidewalks, recreation areas, parking lots etc that don't have a critical mass of law-abiding citizens in the area.
Now I won't walk, park, or drive anywhere that I can't be seen by a steady flow of people.
Too many people have been attacked in locations you wouldn't expect it to happen. It's sad that it's come to this.

The city and the police have known this was happening but did nothing...and now they are surprised it's getting worse?
A long time before the 'broken window theory ' came about there was this : ..."Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil"......

The answer to this type of attack behavior is clear and simple. Concealed Carry. People need to be willing to protect themselves. Just another example that proves when a few seconds could mean the difference between life and death police are only minutes away. I think a rally needs to be held for concealed carry holders Waterfront Park and the Big Four Bridge would be a great venue for a rally. Of course we could wait and see if the mayors comments will stop the violence.
He Said:
“To the young kids; y’all know what you did was wrong, “You weren’t raised this way; it is not the way we roll in the city.”
Other useless comments were made by Louisville Downtown Partnership’s interim director, Rebecca Matheny. Here’s what she had to say:
“It’s incumbent on them,” Matheny said. “If you didn’t know where your kids were Saturday night, ask them. Find out where they were, and take a more active role.
It’s yet to be determined whether or not Wal Mart will cancel plans for a West End store It is highly likely that they will pull out.

Cross posting the following links from the other thread ...
First, the early reporting. Cops say it's unusual, area is safe.
Then the follow up. Local businesses call BS on the cops' stories, say this sort of thing happens on a regular basis.
And, as this story points out, there was even a related incident the day before. Except this one was a knockout-game attack on a gay couple. Which, unlike normal MUY-on-White attacks WILL get the local politicians to sit up and take notice. I expect that the Mayor and City Council will do exactly what DC's Mayor Gray did after a similar attack not to long ago: hold a big press conference to show their support for gay marriage.
Finally, this story, from 2011. Seems to show not only that this sort of thing has a long-term history, but the cops and politicians are fudging the numbers:
Your Louisville City Hall Examiner has received several confidential communications from LMPD officers who claim that the higher-ups have instructed them to downplay the crimes on the waterfront. Cops are encouraged to put a different location on incident and arrest reports. Instead of Waterfront Park, they are told to write North First Street, or East Main Street, and so forth.

Why does the mayor feel he needs to apologize. How ‘bout telling his police chief to get some cops down there and act with extreme prejudice.
