Liquid nicotine: Just a teaspoon could kill
FOX News ^ | March 24, 2014 | Kate Seamons

It can be bought on the Internet in flavors like chocolate and bubble gum—and just a teaspoon could kill a child: The New York Times takes a look at liquid nicotine, the e-liquid used in e-cigarettes, which it describes as a "powerful neurotoxin ... far more dangerous than tobacco." And with good reason: Reports of accidental liquid nicotine poisonings rose 300% from 2012 to 1,351 cases last year, with 2014's figure expected to be double that.

The victims, many children under the age of four, can experience vomiting and seizures after being exposed to even a modest amount orally or through the skin.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune notes that the bottles often convey their flavors with potentially enticing photos of fruits or chocolate, which could attract youngsters; teens, on the flip side, may be combining it with energy drinks to get high, per Fox News Insider.

"It's not a matter of if a child will be seriously poisoned or killed. It's a matter of when," says a director with California's Poison Control System.

"I thought the age limits were there to protect you. How could this have happened."

I don't think there were age limits on snuff back then. Of course prior to our age group, I think snuff was seen as an old lady vice. Not something teenage boys would be interested in. But our class had an abundance of stupid.

I majored in Entomology (study of insects) in college. When I was collecting live specimens, I carried a small jelly jar and would blow cigarette smoke into it after a capture. Most died in about a minute. Haven’t smoked in 30 years, but would love one right now!

Where do you get that? Do you just pull this crap out of your backside?

We know that attempts to commit suicide via drinking eLiquid have resulted in nausea and vomiting, but no other problems. We also know that vomiting is the bodies' natural reaction to mild overdoses of nicotine (overdose is too strong a word, but I don't know the correct word for it). Finally, if there was a real poisoning, given the hysteria in the media about the subject, it is highly implausible that such a case would not garner some kind of media coverage, and would also be included in articles like this (there have been countless articles which address this subject, but yet they never seem to include any actual cases where harm was done).

Yes, I pulled this out of my backside. But the result is a reasonable deduction. Given the lack of information given, we just don't know. But this conclusion is reasonable, whereas the conclusion that the poisonings were serious isn't particularly.

There were age limits on alcohol.

But we had a couple of idiots in middle school who would go buy Dr. Tishenor's mouthwash because it was 200 proof. And they'd get drunk off of mouthwash.

Limits can sometimes help prevent stupid. But really stupid finds a way.

I remember hotels that claimed to have non-smoking rooms, but they'd wash the linen all together and it all stank to high heaven.

You really should find a better class of hotels --- not cleaning linens is not the fault of smokers, but well known in hourly rate hotels................

They washed them, it’s just not that easy to get the smell out.

What’s the difference between nicotine and thc? The latter is politically correct.

There's a huge difference in that one teaspoon of nicotine is enough to kill an adult whereas a person would need to ingest 40,000 times the standard THC dose to cause death. (That's the equivalent of smoking 1500 pounds of weed in 15 minutes.)

"It's not a matter of if a child will be seriously poisoned or killed. It's a matter of when,"

The same thing can be said about ANY over the counter drug.......Might as well target the E-Cig users tho since they've been successfully targeted and demonized.........

they are a stupid, idiotic way to quit smoking. www.fhu.com has a very simple and effective method...

Hey, at least they're quitting smoking that way, rather than dancing to the expensive whims of Big Pharma.

Perhaps in the past, but smokers are completely defeated now. There’s not enough of them left to fight anything, and they are still having abuse heaped on them. So, if the winners can’t be gracious in victory, that shows they never would have been gracious at all.

Also, I don’t think “fighting tooth and nail” is an accurate characterization at all. First, smokers went and sat in the smoking sections, then they went and stood outside, now they stand outside 20 feet from the door. Where is the “fighting tooth in nail” in that? Sounds like compliance to me.

I remember how unpleasant it was when flying and regardless of where one sat one had to breath the smoke and the stench of tobacco would be all on ones clothes afterwards.

Are you aware that since smoking was banned on airlines the airlines have decreased the number of air changes they used to make. In other words, airplane air is now even more unhealthy than it was when smoking was permitted, yet the airlines love it because air changing coasts fuel efficiency.

Neither am I fond of the smokers who flick ashes out the car window when I’m riding behind them.

I am so UNfond of them, no one is permitted to do so in my car - I will (and have) stop and make the offender get out and find it. No one has ever done it twice while riding with me :-)

Needless to say they need to be kept out of the reach of children.

The same thing can be said about every household cleaner in your house and garage.

If I were to make an unannounced, govt. mandated inspection of your house, would I find all those harmfull cleaners appropriately locked up to keep your kids or your grandkids from finding them?

Do you keep your bar soaps locked up? How about your shampoo? They're both toxic if ingested by your children or grandchildren.........You got to protect them don't you?

And if you say yes, does that mean that you would approve such inspections?

No sarcasm here. Let me explain a little further. These e-cigarettes consist of three things mixed together for the “liquid” that goes in there - sometimes referred to as “juice”.

Now, people can actually mix these things themselves and they can get a concentrated form of nicotine. This is done to save money and mix it yourself. Depending on the concentrate of nicotine - it can be awfully dangerous.

I was reading up on it for some relatives and to try and help them save money. But after reading about the dangers of the nicotine - I decided I didn’t want to wear a hazard suit in order to help them out - and I didn’t want to risk killing people.

And that’s true - you CAN BUY a nicotine concentrate strong enough to KILL PEOPLE from fumes alone - not to say anything about kids!
