According to a June 2006 study by Aaron White, then an assistant professor at the Duke University Medical Center, about 40% of college freshmen admitted they engaged in binge drinking: five or more drinks on one occasion. Some 20% of college freshmen admitted they drank even more: between 10 and 15 drinks per drinking session.

Brain studies indicate a lifetime of damage to growing brains especially in the areas where “moral decision making” occurs. After the age of about 21 these areas are “set” and are not as susceptible to damage.

With a trial, convicted murderer, drug addict, hooker and upstanding Mike Nifong "victim" got 14 years. She is now in -- as far as society is concerned -- a far better place.
The only void where a trial is still crying out for the application of justice with these principle players is the trial for Mike Nifong. Until that happens, justice will never be served.

I completely agree. This is not to say that I would allow my children to drink at an earlier age. This is the way in which we’ve raised our kids. Two are in college and both have no desire to drink. We’ve invited them to taste wine was well as beer in our presence. Both disliked it.
The overarching problem lies in the fact that parents are not raising responsible teens. Also, teenagers are being encouraged to live irresponsibly. Adding an earlier drinking age to this only escalates the problems rather than alleviates it.
Only if the NSA can determine that all passengers are conservatives.

In our house, they let the aunts in, who were very instructive. They told us stories, family history, and warned us of all kids of real danger, both in stories and straight talk. they started their visit with a greeting, food and the, “let’s go see your school”. Honestly, they would do a ride along on a sunday, with their fur coats tou our school. They’d have the driver (dad) circle the empty parking lot. In a full sized Lincoln with the double doors.
They were in charge. If the principal had arrived, it’d be no contest.
They earned the right to tell us the dangers out there, and re alcohol. That is just not age specific. They were all raised with a non drinking age, in the days just after prohibition., I guess. But women did not drink heavily, ever. They certainly didn’t.
So there’s one difference, but kids glom on to that stuff. A lot of them do want to do what’s right, they just need a quick role model.

Registration for selective service is mandatory at age 18. If you can trust someone with a handgrenade, you can trust them with a beer.

Stupid idiot. He apparently thinks that there is a national drinking age. There isn’t. Some states tried the 19 year old age when the 18 year old voting passed. Many of those states found out it was more problematic than helpful so they RAISED the drinking age back to 21.

What happened at Duke had nothing whatsoever to do with drinking. A mentally disturbed woman made a preposterous accusation that various people chose to believe

And now it’s easier for a high school kid to get heroin than it is for him to get a 6-pack of beer.
It is an escape, a way to blow-off steam, or party or whatever. I’d much rather it be done with alcohol than a drug that will ensure physical addiction.

I didn't say it was a great idea. It's just not something that would drive me to the ballot box in a frenzy one way or another.
My sibling returned from the UK. Lived in London. Said that the rate of young men suffering from liver disease is stunning. Puke all over the sidewalks and roadways. Beer and hard liquor for breakfast is the norm.
My wife is a British citizen who spends a minimum of one month a year in England. Her last visit (she recently returned to America) was for 3 months. All of her family from her mother and brother to her children and grandchildren still live there. She has never mentioned puke on the sidewalks and alcohol for breakfast. I get the fact you don't like underage drinking but gross exaggerations don't help make your case.

Probably no more or less responsible than anyone else who drinks. Do you think they are responsible enough to pick up an automatic weapon and go fight for you?
In a past life I was a sheriff’s deputy in a small oil town in West Texas, it had 8 churches and 22 bar’s. Wreck’s. DWI’s, fight’s and drunken domestic’s were the standard call. As much as I like a drink of good whisky I have zero tolerance for drunk’s or bar’s. Were it up to me no alcohol would be sold after 9:00 PM by any liquor store restaurant or convenience store. As far as bar’s they wouldn’t be allowed to operate period. Get caught selling to a minor and it’s a mandatory 90 day’s in county.
He can buy and drink all the alcohol he want’s on post.
I’d change it to 22 instead of 21, gives them a chance to get out of college alive.

Having been the 18 year old you described in 69 I never had a problem getting a drink. We could legally purchase alcohol on post and when in country nobody cared what age you were. When we got back it was back to real world and the 21 law. I didn’t have a problem with it. Lowering the limit is nothing but vote pandering just like the legalization of marijuana.
