School Bans Leggings and Yoga Pants – Too Distracting For Boys

Let’s talk about leggings, shall we? They’re a controversial topic all across America.

Now the debate’s landed in Evanston, Illinois, at Haven Middle School.

I think I’ve heard most arguments about leggings: They’re too distracting to the boys. Inappropriate. Unbecoming. They create a lustful atmosphere infecting society and are, in some countries, considered illegal.

And while I particularly love this Utah mom’s approach to lighten the mood, I doubt this writer smiled as she wrote about the controversy.

Earlier this week, I learned that Haven Middle School students are planning a protest against a ban on leggings. A Haven parent forwarded this email, sent to Haven Middle School principal Kathy Roberson on Tuesday, March 11th:

Personally, I think this ban is ridiculous. It’s obnoxious. It’s insulting. It’s lazy and it’s offensive.

I have a middle school daughter. She and her friends wear leggings. And yoga pants. And clothes that don’t always please me. Am I a bad mother for letting my daughter out of the house wearing a shirt that doesn’t cover her bottom? Possibly. Does it confound me when young men walk around wearing pants around their knees or when a therapist wears a purple streak in her hair or when a teacher wears a diamond stud in her nose? It does, but only because those aren’t my styles and it’s my issue, not theirs.

What kind of confusing message are we sending to girls – especially young girls who see public figures (including the First Lady) wearing leggings and yoga pants and whose parents are usually the ones purchasing the clothes and whose male counterparts aren’t told how to dress their bodies but only what not to wear on them? Give me a break.

Every man of us disagrees on your take on the ‘look’ of reading lips....at least on the better preserved wearers.

Sorry

I didn’t think twice. On hot spring or fall days there was an unwritten rule that you could take off the cost and hang it on the back of your desk chair. And there was heat but never AC.

Some of the girls wore tube tops in 8th Grade (1981). Then there were the ever-popular ass-showing shorts for teen girls at that time.

When I was a youngster in school, we had Hot Pants and Mini Skirts.

HOT pants!!! mmmmmmm

I married my wife, mostly, because of the way she wore those HOT pants!

that said, these days? I find the uncovered leggings to be quite distracting.

Yes, it should start at home.
But... my parents made me dress like a civilized gentleman. There was a phase I with through, where as soon as I left the house I would change into clothes until I looked like I was going to audition for a part in a Whitesnake video. Girls did it to and I tell you what... we boys were not complaining.
I am sure girls do something similar now but with internet smut right at their fingertips...
jeez I’m glad I grew up in the 80s.

Well, I meant to say...
A bad mom’s favorite line is... “Are you calling me a bad mom?”

Or a liar will say... “You calling me a liar?”

The answer is to look right in the eyes and a affirmative “YES... yes I am.”

Yes, I suppose with some longer sweatshirts, tunic tops, shirts that fully cover the butt and crotch area... or possibly on very young ones, below middle school. I should have said IMHO they are not appropriate (instead of the unilateral judgment I spouted off).

"Complete Compendium of Catholic School Girls' Measurements" was the hottest underground publication ever to sweep the young males our neighborhood.

Why, you wild man!! {^)

It’s like many here just want to put the girls in a burqua and be done with it! Not a peep about how the boys should dress.

In our societies, sexuality and beauty is associated primarily with young females. Just take a look at the covers of magazines on the rack sometimes. What do the editors put on the cover to promote sales.

This is of course mostly a cultural thing. In ancient Greece, adolescent boys were the thin. Portrayals in artwork outnumber females about 10:1.

So nobody cares how teenage boys dress because they aren't considered examplars of sexuality and beauty. I except a very small minority, consisting mostly of gay males and (apparently) female high school teachers.

Oh really?

Unless it is a tunic style top, with another under it, shirts/tops must be tucked in - for both girls and boys where my daughter attends school. Tank tops, leggings, muscle shirts, etc are all on the forbidden list, and skirts must be longer than finger tips when arms are at sides......

Surely I am not the only one here who does not know what leggings are. And that pic in the thread.... who would wear that and are they considered “distracting” in a way that a clown might be distracting? I don’t see anything “sexy” about them if that is the implication. Is this code for “we don’t want to hurt the plump figured girls feelings”?

LOL!! *wiping tears from eyes laughing* What a great post!

Actually, "leggings" is just a fancy word for "heavy leotard tights." It used to be that they were worn under long garments that at least covered your butt. Big long sweaters, shirts, etc. Classy people still wear them that way, and they're fine and actually usually quite modest.

But the way they wear them now, it's like wearing a leotard. Like having the bottom half of your torso completely sculpted, like a mannequin. Or even like being stark naked and painted, if you like. About as revealing as could be without being nude.

My daughters attended a public high-school with the usual amount of politically correct left-wing crapola. Yet even they laid down some basic standards of modesty for young ladies’ attire.
