SAN JOSE, Calif. Rev. Jesse Jackson plans to lead a delegation to the Hewlett Packard annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday to bring attention to Silicon Valleys poor record of including blacks and Latinos in hiring, board appointments and startup funding.
Jacksons strategy borrows from the traditional civil rights era playbook of shaming companies to prod them into transformation. Now he is bringing it to the age of social media and a booming tech industry known for its disruptive innovation.

IF jj doesn’t dig jjjr could fill him in.
If JJ wants to take on sumpin important why doesn’t he try and sign up for obamacare and get the bros to do it too? Maybe because they would simply tell JJ there is no affordable treatment for his disease and hook him up to that last IV (this won’t hurt a bit JJ)
Open your wallets, suckers!
“Jacksons strategy borrows from the traditional civil rights era playbook of shaming companies to prod them into transformation”
Or he is borrowing from the traditional mafia playbook of extorting them out of some money.
You got it right, precisely.
Back before I retired, I had some black workers in the crew I managed. One gal was sharp, and I recommended her for a supervisor job, which she got. She was from the south, had middle class upbringing and would be considered an Oreo by other blacks (white on the inside). She had no problem learning the ins and outs of wiring, connecting and testing electronics gear. Another black worker was from a ghetto upbringing, and still lived there. Difference of night and day between them (I'm speaking metaphorically as they were both dark skinned).
Not that the guy wasn't smart, as he was brilliant in many ways. However, he had poor grammar skills and would get tongue-tied expressing himself. Growing up in a ghetto environment starved his intellect. It was peer pressure from other blacks to fit in and live their life-style. He managed to extricate himself and was self-taught in electronics and computer programming. He did okay for himself, but was limited in a way that would not have been the case if he were brought up in a different racial setting. I have encountered the same situation with other blacks that I have helped. The black man keeps other black men down.
They are beig bitten by the left wing hand that they feed. Good!
This is not the first time for Jackson and this.
Just about 15 years ago he did the same thing.
Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems took Jackson up on the challenge and said that if Jackson would send him the resumes of as many qualified black engineers as he could, that McNealy would hire ALL of them.
Not another word out of Jackson until now.
Funny how that works ...
Yep, Jesse’s a race hustling con artist with a big mouth and only in it for the bucks, he can’t produce if he’s called out.
In my younger days frauds like him were referred to as four-flushers.
Well, sir:
Although I do not refer to myself as an African-American (let’s try American of African Dissent), I did go to college for electronics engineering, and have been a LAMP stack programmer for going on 15 years (fluent in about 5 computer languages). Also been a Freeper for about 10.
Not that it may count for anything to some, but yes, there are black folks in this industry (nephew works for google, btw; high school friend - also black, runs an entire software department in Kansas City).
With that said, I can assure everyone that Mr. Jackson’s attempt at forcing diversity in the digital realm is a non-starter. Affirmative Action has failed in this industry everywhere its been tried. The market it too competitive, and if pushed, a company can ship the the entire production overseas - without even getting on a plane.
I’ll conclude with this: I’m a little older than most of my peers, but I can say that of the new blood coming into the industry, most are of Asian, Indian, or Middle Eastern dissent. Jackson would do better demanding they hire more white people.
jimjohn - out.
The black man keeps other black men down.....
it’s their culture. So be it. Its a them problem not a me problem.
My point is these kids ARE qualified and would do well in engineering school.
My problem is with a culture that paints anyone with technical skills as a nerd or worse. From the body language I get from the parents when explaining that their kid would have a decent life, a good honorable profession and satisfaction in life you would think it just told them their kid had an incurable disease.
No they pressure the kid into becoming a Lawyer. Like we need more lawyers.
Last year, University of Michigan graduated their first black female Computer Science PhD. She complained of lack of role models.
Are they in engineering?
Point would be, it is a field where cunning and people smarts do not get you very far. Do not even get you through the first year of an engineering degree.
People make fun of engineers for a reason, our minds do work a bit different, and few can do what we do. Asians and Indians are superb at it, possibly a genetic quirk that way.
What is your secret? I have been trying to get qualified kids into engineering, trying to convince them it is cool.
They are willing but their parents. Frustration.
I will hire anyone with talent, real talent I do not care what color they are what God they pray to or if they are male or female. Human capitol is too scarce a commodity to waste on nonsense.
Engineering seems to be just a little above ditch-digger on the scale of things.
To whom am I going to pass my knowledge and expertise on-to?
No it is the culture.
In India engineering is more valued by the culture than medicine and business people, lawyers are at the bottom of the professions.
In China engineering is so valued that engineering schools turned out 1.5M engineers last year. The problem is they have so watered down the curriculum that most of these new graduates could not find their behinds with a map and a flashlight. They are next to worthless.
In Mexico engineers are men of learning and highly revered. The common folk think doctors are witch doctors, businessmen are con-artists and lawyers are thieves.
They will hire as soon as they can find some blacks who can read cursive.
and fifteen years ago come May...Jessie Jackson fathered an illegitimate daughter with a Ms. Stanford..
and he is behind in his child support payments so maybe that is the reason for this upcoming ‘shake down’ ya think???
did a bit of searching..seems he forgets her on special holidays, doesn’t visit...what a Reverend...and he counseled old Billy Clinton..they all make one L O L.
Please don’t tell my mother I’m a lawyer. She thinks I’m a piano player at the local bordello.
