The child would daydream in class, his elementary-school teachers said. He often just didnt pay attention the way they would have liked. This was before the age of prevalent ADHD diagnoses and Ritalin, so no remedy was at hand, either. If one had been, though, who knows what he might have been?
Perhaps not co-valedictorian of his school which he was.
I was that child. And were I attending school today and especially if my behavior had been worse, its likely Id have received that fashionable diagnosis. And why not? It seems everyone now could have ADHD.
This point is made by Dr. Richard Saul, who has been practicing behavioral neurology for 50 years and is the author of the new book ADHD Does Not Exist. In a March 14 Time piece he writes:

By becoming ubiquitous, it lost all meaning.
Me too.
In the olden days they were simply called smart-mouthed rotten brats and a few spankings set them straight.
I know it worked on me, the first time I mouthed-off at school and my Dad hat to come home from work and ‘set me straight’
and I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I believe parents HATE children and want them to sit there like zombies so they invented ADHD to drug them.
We can veer off into another error here, the worship of (a different kind of) abuse. As C. S. Lewis pointed out, the devil sends errors into the world in pairs. Avoiding one exclusively sends people careening into the other.
War against women? Ha! That was BS, but this is an actual war against boys and childhood.
Though we don't deserve it, may we somehow be forgiven for our foolishness and the damage we've done to those whose care and development we've been entrusted.
May we wake up before we get to where this is leading US to.
Nope you’re wrong. And tons of people have it. They way they can tell is they treat it and the problems go away.
Hahahaha!
My ex was an elementary school teacher. She would tell parents that their child needed Ritalin.
Who was she to tell these parents that? She was a teacher with a masters degree. It took her four tries and the highest she ever made on her ACT was 16. She pretty much had a cabbage for a brain but she managed to become a public school teacher.
She had big boobs and I was young and stupid. Again, I said, my ex.
Funny, there was no ADHD when I was a kid. Maybe it’s because there was no Ritalin.
[Ritalin-pushers have an incentive to talk up ADHD]
Yup, then the run the mom out that cannot control their children and blame us all for not drugging them.
I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the devil that sent spanking into the world to correct children. And I don’t think it’s worship to acknowledge when something worked - I know my backside got worn out when I deserved it. And it worked.
Doctor: no such thing as Attention Deficient Look a Squirrel!
I couldn’t resist! :)
I remember a psychology book that showed drawings of 2 boys. One was an angelic looking creature and the other looked like he’d gotten into something dirty. The chapter said “beware of the perfect child”.
Things were so different - boys were allowed to be boys and fathers and mothers did what they had to do to set them straight. Worked for centuries.
Yep!
Once discipline and consequences have been removed from our schools, and parental control toolboxes, there had to be something to blame.
Add to this, single parent families, or both parents working, and you have a marketplace quite willing to accept the “pill” approach to behavior control.
ADHD certainly exists for those who struggle with it. Are there spoiled brats who are misdiagnosed? Yes. Are there people who are correctly diagnosed? Yes.
