Funny, there was no ADHD when I was a kid. Maybe it’s because there was no Ritalin.
[Ritalin-pushers have an incentive to talk up ADHD]
I remember a psychology book that showed drawings of 2 boys. One was an angelic looking creature and the other looked like he’d gotten into something dirty. The chapter said “beware of the perfect child”.
Things were so different - boys were allowed to be boys and fathers and mothers did what they had to do to set them straight. Worked for centuries.
“Funny, there was no ADHD when I was a kid. Maybe its because there was no Ritalin”
And, I bet there was less than 4% in my class who failed to graduate. The further away one gets from the 3R’s, the more money is spent on stupid thories like Common Core.
There was Ritalin. This drug has been in use for about 80 years. Prior to that, they noted that giving some hyperactive kids coffee seemed to ‘calm their nerves’, and it was caffeine that was the drug indicated for this condition for a very long time.
The drug effects the central brain area, which is the area responsible for focus, screening out and/or prioritizing sensory stimuli.
Ritalin is one of the most studied and documented medications ever. It leaves no traces of itself, and unlike caffeine, does not produce withdrawal symptoms in patients who use it for the appropriate conditions.
In people who do not have issues with respect to the central brain, the drug has the opposite effect - causing alertness and general hyperactivity. This makes it one of the most commonly abused drugs prescribed.
It doesn’t take a doctor to spot a kid who MIGHT benefit from either coffee in the AM or Ritalin. A teacher could pull it off, and there have been teachers that have served coffee, or Mt. Dew to these kids and got the desired effect.
Grades improved, discipline incidents decreased, etc.
It doesn’t work for every sh!tass walking the street, but it when it fails the price of failure is some extra calories.
Ritalin has been around since the 1950's a. But it wasn't widely used until the 1990's. ADD ADHD has been a diagnoses since the 1950's or 60's. What hasn't been known is the fact there is a very similar medical condition often caused by sinus allergies, ear infections etc that can mimic ADD ADHD. The behavioral triggers come from auditory and /or optic sensory processing issues. The technological increases have brought about an epidemic of sorts of ADD/ADHD behavior. The good news is Ritalin is not a medication needed to treat it but rather treating the underlying medical cause.
ADD ADHD is real although not near as common as diagnosed IMO. CAPD on the other hand is very under diagnosed. It can be helped with classroom modifications when kids are in school. Kids with CAPD are often thought not to be paying attention. For example you tell a kid take out the trash and get the mail. The kids a person may think is ignoring them. The command is repeated Take out the trash and bring in the mail. The kid says "Huh" as if just now hearing you. You repeat it a third time and the kid in mid sentence seems to suddenly hear and understand what is being said. Well that's because they are just processing what was said the first or second time. It's common in adults as well.
The auditory and optic bombardment upon the sensory processing system in many cases a damaged one is the triggering device behind it. Much of such technology did not exist before even the 1980's.
When I can’t stop diddle’n,
I just take my Ritalin!
