In the olden days they were simply called smart-mouthed rotten brats and a few spankings set them straight.

I know it worked on me, the first time I mouthed-off at school and my Dad hat to come home from work and ‘set me straight’

and I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We can veer off into another error here, the worship of (a different kind of) abuse. As C. S. Lewis pointed out, the devil sends errors into the world in pairs. Avoiding one exclusively sends people careening into the other.

Some of them were kids with very high IQs who were bored out of their minds waiting for the rest of the class to "get it." Some creative teachers back in the day knew the concept of "extra credit" and put such kids' spare time to good use.
