People line up to buy goods at a store in Caracas, Venezuela.
Alvaro Villarueda starts his morning the same way every day putting in a call to his friend who has a friend who works at a Caracas, Venezuela, supermarket.
Today, he's looking for sugar, and he's asking his friend if he knows if any shipments have arrived. As he talks on the phone, his wife Lisbeth Nello, is in the kitchen.
There are 10 mouths to feed every day in this family five of them children. The two youngest are still in diapers.
"The things that are the scarcest are actually what we need the most," Nello says. "Flour, cooking oil, butter, milk, diapers. I spent last week hunting for diapers everywhere. The situation is really tough for basic goods."
As with everything in Venezuela, the reasons given for the food shortages depend on political affiliation. The government says it's the result of unscrupulous businessmen waging an economic war and hoarding by regular people afraid of shortages.
Those in the opposition blame a system that imposes price controls, the lack of money to buy imports and problems in the supply chain after the expropriation of farms and factories by the socialist government.

Communists never "wise up" because they are never directly affected by the misery they cause. Around 20% real unemployment in the USA with medical coverage being cancelled for thousands of citizens but Michelle and the girls are off on their, what is it, their fourth or fifth vacation just this year? I'd suspect the higher reaches of the Venezuelan government are similarly immune to shortages of the basic necessities of life. And there are always the Kulaks, the Koch brothers, and other class enemies around to blame.
This will sort out when Sean Penn's friends are cornered and strung up from lamp posts. I am hoping he's in-country when it happens so he can hang with them in socialist solidarity.
I know this is about more than just the diapers but doesn’t anyone remember what people did before “Pampers” came to be the standard?
Thanks to Obama: Coming to a major city near you very shortly!
When will the military kick the socialists out?
That's the "upside" of this food shortage and economic collapse... without food the people will no longer create waste, therefore toilet paper is no longer needed or required. Behold, the "miracle" of centrally planned economies...
How’s the toilet paper holding out? That was last months shortage.
I spoke with a number of folks last fall who live in Venezuela who said at that time that there were long toilet paper lines. I guess it’s more than toilet paper now.
That’s a line for MILK..isn’t Socialism great LOL Meanwhile I don’t see the usual Commie lovers like Sean Penn and others flying over to Venezuela to join that line
We washed and folded cloth diapers. Endlessly, or so it seemed! :-)
And NPR will blame this on right wing Republicans since it can’t possibly blame socialist utopians who actually run the country.
Well gun sales have gone up the last couple of years though.
More and more people are going back to reusable diapers, either for health, or economic reasons.
This is what a planned economy looks like.
NPR wants the same-thing here, clearly, as they spout Marxism from their taxpayer-funded perches...with large Commie money from Soros and Left Foundations picking up the rest of the tab.
So, NPR, if you take away private property and a free market, this is what you get. You adore this crap, so take Penn down there and starve, maggot.
Or when they flee the country to avoid the nooses. I expect this will happen during the coming food riots.
ALL of these people VOTED for this!!! The poor thought they were getting back at the rich.......they did, everyone was brought down or SILENCED, and now the poor dumbasses got exactly what they voted for.
Pray America wakes up
There's a saying we have in my industry:
If you're gonna be dumb, ya gotta be tough.
This forum should be about critical thinking among conservatives because forums tend and bend towards a dominant political ideology. FR is no exception.
We need less knee jerk treason accusations and more critical reasoning.
