More people are moving out of New Jersey than are moving in. The same is true for Illinois and New York. Those three states top the "outbound" list compiled by United Van Lines, the big St. Louis-based moving company that has put together an annual survey of where Americans are moving for the last 37 years.
The company analyzed a total of 125,000 moves across the 48 continental states and the District of Columbia in 2013 and came up with a picture of migration patterns across the U.S.
According to Professor Michael Stoll, chair of the Department of Public Policy at the University of California Los Angeles and a consultant to United Van Lines who studies American migration, the moves reflect long-term shifts in the U.S. economy and the hit to employment in many states resulting from the slow recovery.
Of the top nine states where more people moved out than moved in, four are in the Northeast: In addition to New Jersey and New York, Connecticut (No. 5) and Massachusetts (No. 8) make the list. The list also reflects Americans’ desire to leave the frigid states in the north for warmer climes. "Over the last 20-30 years there has been a general shift of the population from the Midwest and Northeast to the South and West, which we think of as a move from the frost belt to the sun belt," Stoll says.

Last census stated that ny lost 4 seats or ev’s (not sure which) and we (FL) gained 4.
I like living in SFL. Little warm and tropical in the summer but as long as you have ac you’re good to go. Just stay indoors from July to Sept. The rest of the yr makes up for it. Plus shorts, flip-flops and tank-tops year round is comfy.

Yep, but moreover it doesn't factor for all the welfare bums moving into states.
A producer-taxpayer moving out is NOT offset by a looter (or two) moving in.
If I ever moved down south, the last thing I would say is “That’s how we did it up north” unless it was to point out a mistake they were going to make.
And here they come to the West. And there goes the peace, quiet and freedom.
Can you give me a specific town or county to investigate? Not sure Missouri fits my climate needs, but maybe it depends on north or south part.

I like living in SWPA. It is a little cold and miserable in the winter, but as long as you have heat, your are good to go. Just stay indoors from December to February. The rest of the yr makes up for it. Plus shorts, flip-flops and tank-tops during the summer and a light jacket otherwise is comfy.
I also note that DC is #4 on the inbound list. That’s clearly something we need to fix.

The way it worked was this... The New Yorkers moved west into NJ starting in the 1950s and really ramping up through the 1980s, when many of the the farms of rural Hunterdon county were transformed into raising McMansion.
Taxes went up and up and up and the people voting for these tax increases turned things bluer and bluer and bluer... (though, I will say that Hunterdon County is still red... give it 10 more years).
The outrageous property taxes drove the original familys across the Delaware river into PA, and the Democrats, having ruined the property tax situation in NJ began to follow into PA... most of the Lehigh Valley is House farms now and the same deal is going on that happened 30 years ago in NJ... the retirees from NJ are going south... some probably via PA.
I say if you are down there... invest in shops that sell “Old Man Hats”.... know what I mean? Those old geezers you see driving down the road 20MPH under the limit... they all wear Old Man Hats.

We picked moving to an uber-liberal state, Hawaii, because we wanted to retire here eventually, and I have had a great time infuriating liberals here ever since. Drives them nuts to find out not everyone is in lockstep with liberal dogma.

What on earth is the draw to Oregon? I mean the unemployed barristas that move to Portland CAN’T AFFORD United Van Lines... and don’t have furniture to move anyways.
