Sen. Rand Paul and Gov. Chris Christie placed first and second in a straw poll held during this weekend's Northeast Republican Leadership Conference, but Dr. Ben Carson may have stolen the show without being a candidate for anything. He emerged in third place with 11 per cent support, tied with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Sen. Rick Santorum. Paul led them by less than four points, with 14.7 per cent support. Christie polled 13 per cent. A 'draft committee' intent on sparking Carson to run for the White House in 2016 raised more than $2.8 million in its first six months of existence. That's more than double what the 'Ready For Hillary' group raised in its initial half-year, even though Hillary Clinton's candidacy seems far more assured than Carson's.

And I’ll do you the favor of sending you this link.
He is a proven loser with no apparent substance
You didn’t ask me but I like Santorum and could vote for him. But I do believe he’d stumble over his words at times.
Just the little detail that we use elections to choose Presidents, and that it is most unusual for a sitting US Senator to lose his reelection race by 18% to an opponent who posted the greatest number of votes ever in history for a Democrat in his state.
The only thing I have against Rick Santorum is that he is a proven loser.
There are basically 3 issues now that anyone wanting to be thought of as a legitimate conservative HAD BETTER have clear, straight, answers to. They are:
1) Abortion
2) Amnesty
3) Gun Control
If you throw yourself into the political arena, whether or not you’ve declared for anything, you BETTER have acceptable answers on these, or that calls into question whether you’ve done any prep work at all.
In the case of Carson - I understand where he’s coming from, both Detroit and Baltimore (and I do know JHU there, as I once crossed an unmarked demarcation zone there and barely made it back). It is scary to see big, threatening, (race other than white) people. It is scarier to think they may have guns. Outlaw the guns, they are not as scary (even though, of course, they are just as likely to have guns).
Carson is 62. He’s had MORE DECADES than most people considering political office to figure this stuff out, particularly the Constitution. Maybe he could be dragged into reading the Second Amendment, and maybe there would still be enough Republicans in Congress to stop him if he doesn’t bother.
But we can do better. He will also be nominating people for the courts. On what will he base those nominations on? Not interpretation of the Constitution - obviously, then what? ABA rating? Not good a sign.
Too bad. If he was grounded in the Constitution, a simple answer like “Read the Second Amendment” would have launched him straight towards the White House (at least initially).
No, he’s not pro-gun control. http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2014/03/10/Dr-Ben-Carson-Against-Gun-Registration-Because-We-Should-Be-Really-Concerned-About-Martial-Law
Those other items you discuss are what we would find out in a debate and campaign literature, as it is, a lot of folks aren’t sure on how to handle the Ukraine.
I would feel better if Sen Cruz was at top of this list.
One other MAJOR COMMENT:
Actually the BIGGEST NEWS from that straw poll was just how bad Christie did. Just by reading the article, it was CLEAR that the event was TOTALLY RIGGED so that Christie would walk away with it...yet another victory in his coronation march.
In listening to Allen West over the past few years, I’d put his integrity up against virtually anyone. As well as him being a true conservative. Let me know when Christ runs for office, until then I’d take Allen West in a heartbeat to set this country back on a good path.
“No, hes not pro-gun control.”
Figuring it out last week is certainly better than nothing, but I figured out gun control when I was about 50 younger, and well before I put my foot in my mouth on it.
And no, I’m no fan of Sarah as I STILL do not know where she stands on Amnesty - other than saying that our system is “broken” and we need to “fix it”. Which, unfortunately, are usually code words for supporting Amnesty.
Dr. Carson’s own 3 paragraph essay on the 2nd amendment.
The air-traffic controllers thought that too. Ronald Reagan proved them wrong.
A Cruz Presidency would be all about management, as in the people he selected to run various departments. They'd need to be strong and tough, as would be the case for any conservative President.
And it's safe to say that in a number of cases, a President Cruz would look at the Constitutional viability of a number of Federal agencies (Education, EPA, Energy, etc.) and hopefully act accordingly.
Well, this essay is from last year: http://libertycrier.com/carson-founders-give-us-second-amendment/?utm_source=The+Liberty+Crier&utm_campaign=e93b1fdef8-The_Liberty_Crier_Daily_News_12_13_2013&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_600843dec4-e93b1fdef8-284722857
Doesn’t sound like last week if truth is any sort of issue in honest debate.
What does that even mean? Because he has a pen and a phone, he can issue decrees?
“On Monday at The New York Meeting, Dr. Ben Carson said he does not believe in gun registration because...martial law may be imposed.
Carson...said that he...was against gun registration because of the sinister internal forces that could surface... He said he used to think they needed to be registered, but if you register them they just come and find you and take your guns.” (shortened for brevity, only)
I also have A PROBLEM with a person running for high office saying this (even though I and most of us agree with it), as it leaves him WIDE OPEN to attack from the left, who could EASILY label him as a paranoid kook. It was a REALLY DUMB thing to say in his situation. It’s almost like he’s trying to win back the Beck people, by trying to sound like them. Not good, at all.
Again, a MUCH EASIER answer is to simply say that the Second Amendment PROTECTS gun ownership and if people don’t like that, they can work to change the Constitution.
They broke a law which provided that the penalty for lawbreaking was getting fired (actually, they were not fired - they vacated their jobs by statute, and Reagan simply replaced them).
He is a very quick learner.....
“We do, however, require that anyone driving a car on the streets of our nation have a license to do so, indicating the successful completion of adequate training. We do not grant licenses to certain categories of individuals who would be deemed unsafe drivers. This is done for the safety of the public at large.”
He was doing really well, until this. So he does support RAISING THE BAR for gun ownership. That tells me that he doesn’t understand the critical mass concept that is ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED to protect gun ownership, at ANY LEVEL.
I think that Glenn needs to talk to him a bit more.
We have two years of political votes to judge West on. According to National Journal, he was the 110th most conservative Rep in Congress, with an overall 75% rating—though he rated only 51% conservative on the economy. (He was quite a bit higher on foreign affairs and social issues.)
Sure, he’s an imperfect conservative like most Republicans, but there’s also nothing that would commend him to presidency if he weren’t a black Republican.
Because he would hopefully work with the conservative Congress we’re all working to elect in 2014 to reduce the size of government by getting rid of agencies without a Constitutional mandate.
