Investigators Suspect Missing Airlines Plane Flew On for Hours (Update!)

Investigators Believe Plane Flew On for Total of Up to Five Hours

U.S. investigators suspect that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 stayed in the air for up to four hours past the time it reached its last confirmed location, according to two people familiar with the details, raising the possibility that the plane could have flown on for hundreds of additional miles under conditions that remain murky.

The investigators believe the plane flew for a total of up to five hours, according to these people, based on analysis of signals sent by the Boeing 777's satellite-communication link designed to automatically transmit the status of certain onboard systems to the ground.

Throughout the roughly four hours after the jet dropped from civilian radar screens, these people said, the link operated in a kind of standby mode and sought to establish contact with a satellite or satellites. These transmissions did not include data, they said, but the periodic contacts indicate to investigators that the plane was still intact and believed to be flying.

Corrections & Amplifications U.S. investigators suspect Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 flew for hours past the time it reached its last confirmed location, based on an analysis of signals sent through the plane's satellite-communication link designed to automatically transmit the status of onboard systems, according to people familiar with the matter. An earlier version of this article incorrectly said investigators based their suspicions on signals from monitoring systems embedded in the plane's Rolls-Royce PLC engines and described that process.

How deep is the deepest part of the Indian Ocean?

“Investigators of the Payne Stewart incident never concluded the speed of the decompression - whether it was slow or rapid. A commercial airliner’s oxygen systems are automatic and should deploy when the cabin pressure exceeds a certain altitude - something not required of private jets. They also deploy for the pilots. At 35,000’ the time of useful consciousness is from 30 to 60 seconds”

You are not familiar with FAA certification standards. I am type rated in several types of “private” jets and they all have automatic oxygen mask deployment. On the other hand, pilot’s oxygen masks do NOT deploy automatically. Pilot’s have quick donning oxygen masks.

why not hijack a redeye airliner, fly it westward under the cover of darkness, land it somewhere in an islamic country, and start beheading the passengers, one by one after several days?

What country?

I don't see a reason to ever shut off the transponder while the plane is moving...why is there a manual switch?

Never been a pilot I'd guess. It is powered by the plane's electrical system, subject to fire, isolate so you have power for other systems.

Thank you for the correction.

“Well, it doesn’t “immediately kill”. TUC - time of useful consciousness is altitude dependent. At 35,000 feet, you can go from 30 to 60 seconds before you enter la-la land. A rapid decompression (i.e. a BIG hole in the fuselage) can cut that time in half. But still plenty of time to get over the “WTF was that?” and put on the mask.”

Right idea, wrong terms. The big hole would lead to an explosive decompression, not a rapid decompression.

Aircraft and engine manufacturers have own engineers working alongside with any airline’s maintenance sites as consultants or technical representatives. They have access to everything from ACARS data, on-board and maintenance diagnostics, etc., Mr. Hussein, the Malaysia transport minister, may not be aware of.

I’m afraid that false accusations, particularly of sodomy, have been SOP since Mahathir’s time.

I don’t think it went to Iran, too much coverage by AWACs, satellites, etc.

If anything, I think it landed at Banda Aceh (it has an airport that can land 747’s) which is on the western tip of the south island - and also is a bit ‘separatist’ (extremist) government and has sharia law - which tells you a lot.

Then they dumped the passengers (ow hostages, or dead), then refueled and flew to Africa, to a muslim friendly country, where there is very little radar coverage. And that probably happened four days ago.

Also, the Malaysian government has been very unhelpful, so I think they are in on it. I am also guessing the flight crew was in on it.

What they will do with a very big, ‘heavy’ aircraft that has a 7,000 nm range is anyone’s guess. But I would imagine it isn’t good.

Also the flight went (conveniently) in the middle of the night so there was a lot of time to do what they needed to do under the cover of darkness.

It’s what I would do if I was up to no good!

This plane had the whole night to do weird stuff without notice. Sad to say, but I hope it’s “only” an unintended crash, or even “only” a purposeful crash ala Flight 93, or even “only” a crash ala (allah) Egypt Air, because any other disappearance suggests that this plane will reincarnate... as an angel of death.

I purpose summary executions of any person who offers conjecture as fact regarding this incident or otherwise makes statements later proved to be untrue.

That should settle things down a bit.

It was pretty obvious to me this was Muslim related from the get go. media reported that us officials said that the idea that those 2 muslims on stolen passports had anything to do with it was unlikely. not buying that.

I am betting if crew was involved, it was NOT the one with the home simulator, and who basically had a mile high club meeting a few years ago with the lasses in the cockpit.

They probably had to kill or subdue him. It seems to me, that that guy loved his job more than just about anything else, and the perks that came with it, including the flocks of young adoring women.

To think he would have had a sudden onset of passion about something outside of the world of commercial aviation would seem far-fetched to me.

I understand that...but...how much power dose a transponder use, and how many shorts/fires have been caused by a transponder? If the engines can broadcast their status themselves independent of pilot actions, it can't be that much of a burden for the plane itself to do so.

Why not a latter day version of A Comet (BOAC) failure? Some fault as yet unknown which brings about sudden absolute failure of the plane? Something in the timeline preclude this? Or is it unlikely as hell in the CAD/testing age?
