Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates predicts that Russia will continue to control Crimea for the foreseeable future.
"I do not believe that Crimea will slip out of Russia's hand," he said in an interview aired on "Fox News Sunday."
"You think Crimea's gone?" host Chris Wallace asked.
"I do," Gates replied. Russia has bloodlessly seized control of Crimea over the past week and has moved to formally annex it. The Crimean parliament has scheduled a vote on whether to join Russia for next week.
"I think it's part of a long-term strategy on Putin's part to create a Russian sphere of influence, a Russian bloc," Gates said, adding later: "I don't think he will stop in Ukraine until there is essentially a pro-Russian government in Ukraine, in Kiev."
Gates said he supported efforts by Congress and the administration to increase sanctions on Russia.

We got Obama because McCain and Romney had serious deficits. We got Kerry whom we voted against because Susan Rice is even worse.
And if the 'pubs don't give us a real conservative next election, we'll get hillary.
” Crimeas parliament voted in favor of returning the to Russian union, people in Russia are holding massive demonstrations in favor of Crimea returning, massive demonstrations in Crimea supporting the vote -
why is the US exercised over this issue?”
Mr. SKerry should shut up already and stop digging, when he’s at the bottom of the pit.
Serious question...a few years from now when much of the Southwestern US is majority Mexican, various state legislatures controlled by Mexicans vote to return to Mexico, people in Mexico holding massive demonstrations in favor of SW states returning, massive demonstrations in SW states supporting the vote....Should the rest of the US be exercised over the issue?
Of course, nobody but a full blown, “Code Pink”, “Socialism at any cost”, leftard would try to argue that the European union has not become as bad as Russia. Daily Kos types will try to infer that without even arguing it but then, that’s why we make fun of them.
Once the Eurocrats decided to try to get their hooks into the Ukraine at any cost and overcoming any resistance the Ukraine was screwed unless another superpower moved to help them maintain their neutral position.
With Obambi in office, there was no support to be had.
Crimea is “gone?” When did WE ever have it?
Why is the US so worked up over this? Benghazi is no big deal, but let Russia take back territory they controlled for several hundred years and all he’ll breaks out.
If the most Russian areas of Ukraine go back to Russia, will that help put a pro-Russian government in Kiev?
Not saying putting a pro-Russian government in charge in Kiev isn't possible, but it seems like Putin has an odd way of going about doing so in the post-Soviet, post-superpower era.
How did California join the US in the first place? It was part of Mexico. Under the Mexican constitution, the US had no right to take it.
No, Texas is next.
By the time it gets to that point the rest of the U.S. would probably be thrilled to see those states secede and join Mexico.
Have the Mexicans in the Soutwest an autonomous republic, whith its own constitution, parliment, government and budget as russophone Crimea has? If they don’t, they cannot claim a breakaway from any State in the US.
Divine judgment (Isa.3:12)
As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.
Well it isn’t!
***Should the rest of the US be exercised over the issue?***
Yes, but should we expect France to come to our rescue? They may surrender all of California to them.
California was an independent republic briefly before it joined the United States.
Doesn’t he have Boy Scouts to corrupt?
Serious answer.....there was a war with Spain and the US, Spain went to war with Mexico. Mexico lost, Spain turned the land over to the US.
Mexican does not own or have they ever owned the land they are claiming, it is liberal bovine execrate.
Mexico has an issue with losing the land they need to learn to fight, and win.
The fake anger belongs pointed towards the Spanish.
Crimea declared independence in 1992. It refers to itself as an autonomous republic, with its own constitution.
