Rand Paul wins 2014 CPAC straw poll, Ted Cruz finishes a distant second
The Associated Press ^ | 03-08-2014 | Stephen Dinan

Sen. Rand Paul demolished his competition in the 2014 Washington Times/CPAC presidential preference straw poll on Saturday, winning 31 percent of the vote -- nearly three times the total of second-place Sen. Ted Cruz.

Mr. Cruz's 11 percent was still a big improvement for the freshman senator, who won just 4 percent in last year's straw poll. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson was third with 9 percent and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was fourth with 8 percent in results that signal growing discontent with the GOP establishment in Washington.

Indeed, CPAC voters now have an unfavorable view of Republicans in Congress, with 51 percent saying they disapprove of the job the GOP is doing on Capitol Hill. Just last year the GOP had a 54 percent approval rating, and in 2012 they held a 70 percent approval rating.

“This is meaningless, half the voters were under 30 years old. That is a group who don’t show up at the polls.”

From your mouth to God’s ear!

I don’t have use for Ron Paul and that transfers to his son Rand. I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR RAND PAUL in either a primary or general election. I will stay home in 2016 if that fool gets the nomination. I should have stayed home rather than vote for Romney...but to my shame I did vote for him. I will not repeat that mistake.

Romney was the GOPe candidate and should not have gotten any support from a true conservative Republican.

Rand Paul is a Libertarian (Not a real Republican) and he should not get a true conservative Republican’s support. He will not get mine.

I am through voting for persons that do not represent me.....even remotely.

President Lincoln was a former one-term congressman. Mr. Obama is a former half-term senator. JFK was a senator, as was President Harding.

The young Republicans were in force at CPAC. They voted to legalize marijuana too. So, Rand Paul got their votes. Drudge has a voting going on... Paul and Cruz are about even in that count.

That's just about the most cynical thing I've seen in a while. So it's probably true.

CPAC was loaded with young conservatives. I wouldn’t put to much weight into that poll.

Here's how I see the race shaping up, as an observer...not an advocate.

Yes, Paul has the slim majority right now and is likely to do well in the debates. He is starting to make the (l)ibertarian wing of the party respectable.

Of course Cruz will dominate every debate and EVERYONE will credit him for it. He'll finish strong, at least, in the primaries.

There will be an evangelical/values candidate to keep morality in view. This is necessary to stop the (L)ibertarians from dominating. But neither Huckabee (the nicest guy in America, no kidding) or Santorum will attrack enough votes to win. They're power brokers.

IF Palin starts exploring I believe she will shake things up substantially. She'll siphon off votes from both Paul the (l)ibertarian (Palin is from the western school of little (l)ibertarians, not unlike Goldwater and Reagan and Cheney) and from Cruz ( a little bit of everything and big C (C)onservaitve all the way.

But Cruz is showing to be a Neo Con...at least that's my perception and one I hope he'll endeavor to clarify and disprove (ok, that part was opinion).

Certainly Cruz is the most articulate of any Republican since Reagan.

Then there will be the Chamber of Commerce/Full on Amnesty candidate. Bush, Christie...it doesn't matter. They're all the same. They'll have money, media and organizational support. Big institutional support.

But it won't be enough this time.

Additionally Neo Cons are being marginalized. Most folks on the American Right are tiring of their sh!t.

IF Palin runs, I see a Paul-Palin Ticket.

If she does not, I see a Cruz-Paul ticket NARROWLY defeating the establishment candidate.

2016 will have a radical flavor...with a good dose of morality.

What is Rand Paul’s position on illegal immigration?

The few times he let his guard down, he has indicated he would be 100% for Amnesty. However, knowing the politics of Conservatives, he tries to sound measured and "against" amnesty.

Rand would be a horrible candidate and a destructive President.

I have no doubt he would do little about securing the border. He would continue to allow the hoards of anti-capitalist third world scum pour across our border.

A simple thought experiment to those who think otherwise. Imagine the next President strictly securing our border, say with the military. Who do you imagine would do such? One could see Cruz or Palin. Rand, never in a million years.

That would certainly help.

But why does the federal govt get to define marriage?

Why does the fed govt get to legalize killing unborn children?

I think libertarians put their political fingers in the wind and selectively deconstruct govt power to give liberals what they want and form faux bipartisan bridges.

Marriage and pro life items were excluded as panels. That’s because anti conservatives delight in abusing the forum of CPAC to deny voice to social conservatives. I think libertarians like power abuse if it fits their agenda.

So far Rand Paul is my man, foreign policy notwithstanding, because he's so clear that by far the greatest threat to America and our freedoms is the large, unconstitutional, socialist federal government. I want somebody who will CLOSE DOWN most of the cabinet departments,

All that is meaningless if the border is NOT secured.

Paul has indicated that he is for open borders and 100% amnesty. Rand Paul is NOT a Conservative.

Am sure others pointed this out here multiple times, but a small % ever take part in the poll, thats been the way its gone down for years.

I dont say this out of any dislike for any of the Paul`s, they always win this and its dishonest the way that its always covered.

Just watched Sarah give the keynote address (she was fabulous) I watched it on Fox News, Greg Jarret was the host and he laughed and mocked her, it was so so disgraceful

I hope that he is spoken to about his outrageous behavior

Amnesty and the efficacy and advisability of drug laws and enforcement are debatable. What is not debatable is we've got to stop playing footsie with the 8000lb gorilla government that threatens our whole free way of life. As far as I'm concerned that issue trumps all other issues and Paul and Palin are the most ardent proponents that I've seen for cutting government and taxes. Unfortunately its hard to vote for a non-candidate like Palin.

I don't like Paul's isolationist-sounding foreign policy - I believe we're here to stop aggressive countries against us and other free countries around the world (I HATE the so-called Bush doctrine however). But as far as I'm concerned, the guy who is most serious about deep cuts in government and taxes is the one I'll be most interested in.

We've got to decide what the MOST important issue is becasue we'll never all agree on everything. The Leftists are having a field day with the Right because of the myriad of issues the Right is tangled up with. The ONE THING the Left does not want the Right to get clear and unified on is CUTTING GOVERNMENT AND TAXES. They and their MSM mouthpiece will do everything they can to prevent that. So far, they're succeeding.

Yep....for me, the immigration issue is a dealbreaker when it comes to Paul.

If Palin is the nominee, I’ll vote for her, but I don’t think she’s going to run. I prefer Ted Cruz.
