Could you give up the internet for Lent - or even for good?
Following various reports about companies stealing information and complaints about oversharing on social media, a web hosting firm has created a nine-step guide on how to disappear from the web completely.
It includes deactivating accounts, removing links from search results and how to remove yourself from various lists - and for people who'd rather just stay hidden than disappear, the guide also gives tips on how to use the internet anonymously.
'Social media has made everyones life an open book - one thats open a bit too far in some cases.
For [people] concerned about their personal information potentially costing them jobs and relationships, the decision to pull the plug is an increasingly attractive one,' said London-based WhoIsHostingThis (WIHT).
While it might seem impossible to keep your private life private, the truth is you can disappear online with a little effort and dedication.'

I thought all I had to do to disappear from the Internet was to post an Opus here and then the moderators would zot me out of existence.
That's still true, isn't it?

I don’t think any amount of removing yourself from Facebook, etc., will remove you from the internet.
Whenever you buy property or do anything that is a matter of public record, that information ends up on the internet. I was contacted a couple of years ago by someone who had never met me, but who knew my name and used it to find my mailing address by a Google search. Fortunately, this was a person I wanted to get to know as soon as I learned about her.
The fact is, you cannot hide. This was true even before the internet. You could probably become a hermit—but that is extreme.

Moving to North Korea might do it, but it’s not a very pleasant way to accomplish internet anonymity.

Fasmail.fm used to be a good site for free "disposable" email accounts but now they want premium accounts.
Using them you now just sign up for other accounts using fictitious addresses. Go to, www.usps.com/ then use the zip finder app to find real city zip codes.

To remove yourself from whitepages.com you have to create an account. That’s hardly being invisible. IOW, they have you over a barrel. You can NOT disappear. Ever.

for two bucks a month i also use a proxy server from firefox. It has annoying consequences like my bank web site doesn’t like it because it assumes it’s a foriegn computer but that is a good thing.

"You could probably become a hermitbut that is extreme."
Let's see... Sirens, traffic noise, neighbors yelling, dogs barking, sounds of televisions, radios, low flying aircraft, frequent knocks at the door, more visitors, more telephone calls, folks with nothing better to do than cruising and ogling the residents of the typical metropolitan human Zoo,...
Or living as a semi-hermit with peace, quiet and natural scenery, indulging in hobbies and physical fitness with few distractions, rarely experiencing the above sights and sounds?
Which is more extreme?

Of all the Opus’s, (opusii ?) posted on FReep, I’ve yet to read a “good opus”. They are all self-serving and yawners.

Wow! You just described my life in Idaho!!...the living as a semi-hermit paragraph.

Opus is Latin third declension neuter. The plural is opera.
