PEW RESEARCH: Millennials in Adulthood -- 50% now describe themselves as political independents
Pew Social Trends ^ | 03/07/2014

The Millennial generation is forging a distinctive path into adulthood. Now ranging in age from 18 to 331, they are relatively unattached to organized politics and religion, linked by social media, burdened by debt, distrustful of people, in no rush to marry— and optimistic about the future.

They are also America’s most racially diverse generation. In all of these dimensions, they are different from today’s older generations. And in many, they are also different from older adults back when they were the age Millennials are now.

Pew Research Center surveys show that half of Millennials (50%) now describe themselves as political independents and about three-in-ten (29%) say they are not affiliated with any religion. These are at or near the highest levels of political and religious disaffiliation recorded for any generation in the quarter-century that the Pew Research Center has been polling on these topics.

At the same time, however, Millennials stand out for voting heavily Democratic and for liberal views on many political and social issues, ranging from a belief in an activist government to support for same-sex marriage and marijuana legalization.

When you have no strong beliefs, you take the first, easiest, cheapest one in sight

50% can’t pick a side and fight and rather be view as open minded so not to offend anyone. These 50% want to see whose going to win so they can say “yeah, I voted for that person, see how smart and independent I am” I voted for the minority so I’m not racist either.

Maybe one of the mods can correct the ages.

“It is Now ranging in age from 18 to 33.”

Reasearch has shown that over 80% of those who call themselves “independents” end up voting for the candidate of the same party they voted for in the last election.

Really don’t know any of these people.

However, our nephews, nieces and other relatives in their 40’s, who are doers not bitchers/whiners, do not care for this group. Below are their observations about these losers.

They label them as the continuing failures to launch in life.

If they have an education, it is usually one of the worthless instant unemployment degrees.

Many are still living with parents, grandparents or some other unfortunate relative.

They often have a large student loan debt and can be seen during normal work hours at a coffee shop using the free wifi to connect with other losers/whiners.

In spite of their claims of being independent, a majority voted twice for the current loser pretending to be present.

Jocks and others coming out of the closet are their heroes.

I would not say they have no strong beliefs. The strongly believe in legalizing pot for example. Their beliefs just don’t align with either party. Many may be brainwashed liberals yet don’t trust dems either. A key question is what percentage view themselves as conservatives?

What I mean is, they *didn’t* have any strong belief. Then they found that magic smoke that makes life easy. They have one now.

Too stupid to know the difference!

Just like a herd of sheep, it only takes one dog to control the entire flock.

Wait until they get into the real world, when reality “hits” them HARD.

I may very well have inadvertently become an independent.... Conservatives are pretty much independent now that the GOP seems to have weighed anchor and sailed left.

I don’t know what else to conclude after the GOP thought Mitt was an actual conservative .....

My thoughts exactly! I suspect there are far more libtards moving to independent than those of us on the right. My LIV sister who voted for Odumbo, is one.

“Got to remember they said the same thing about another generation, called “gen X”

Actually, the relatives and others I’m quoting are Gen Xers.

Here is a list of the years and generations

1927-1945 - Silent Generation or Traditionalists

1946-1964 - Baby Boomers

1965-1983 - Gen X or the Busters

1984- 2002 - Gen Y or the Millennials

2003- Current Gen Z or the Digital Generation
